I am looking at a 2nd owner 2007 Prius with 155K miles. The seller listed it for $6K which I feel is overpriced but they are willing to accept $5500 which I still feel is overpriced which is why I am posting here. The hybrid battery replaced 45K miles ago and the brake system was replaced in December. Should I consider this or walk away?
Welcome to PriusChat!! If the battery is a Toyota OEM replacement, then it could be a reasonable deal. If the battery is a medley of used ancient cells, then you could be looking at a replacement in the future. Does this battery come with a transferable warranty that includes labor? What sort of brake work was done?
I feel like that is a bit high. But it depends on your location. I just picked up my second Gen2 Prius. This one is loaded (Leather, bluetooth, b/u camera, nav). It is an 08 with 117k miles. I purchased it from a dealer for 5900. Just my $0.02
I was told that the battery and brake system was done by Toyota. I am assuming there is no warranty on the battery since it already has 45K miles on it. It was supposedly $3500 for the battery and $2K for a new braking system that was also done by Toyota.
I think it does but I think this one is high because the owner insists that they priced it because of the hybrid battery replacement, new braking system and newer tires. Basically, putting the cost of their maintenance back on to the purchaser. There are not too many Prius's for sale here, all besides this one are from dealers that have dealer fees. If I want to drive 200 miles I can find better deals.
Bear in mind that those are the big two at that age. As long as you can see the paper work to confirm what was done a Toyota re battery and brakes (was it the brake actuator or something else?), I think it is fair value. I don't think the previous owner is making any profit on this car, even at that price $5500). You could drive 200 miles, but would they really be better deals? You would be wondering about the HV battery and brake actuator.
Yeah, I suppose if it was a new toyota battery, sure. But if it was a refurb, I would say that's a different story.
If it was done by Toyota, it will be new. That is why you need to see the paperwork to verify. So many people say they put in a new battery, but when you look into it, they mean a refurb the is new to them, but in a lot of case the "refurb" contains internals that are older than the battery they took out, so not really new at all.
I verified with Toyota today that it was the Toyota OEM hybrid replacement done at 119K miles so it actually has less miles than than the owners claim it has. As far as the braking system goes, I verified that the ABS actuator was done but not the entire system. I guess my question is has any of the following been done. Am I asking too much for the below to have been done? Worst case scenario is I buy this thing for $5500 and then have to do maintenance they are behind on. Is that a deal braker? Some of this is costly, right? Headlights, struts, rear brake shoes, water pump (ICE), trans-axle fluid,Inverter Coolant change, Engine Coolant change What about brake pads, rotors, drums, caliber?
Very true. Part of the reason I am considering it at 155k miles is because the hybrid battery has been replaced.
Depending where you are in Florida, it might be good if Todd from Tampa Hybrids was able to inspect the car. He is a very trusted expert here. Todd also sells used Prii and lists a 2007 PKG 2 with 252k miles and a newer hybrid battery for $4995. Lutz FL - 2007 Toyota Prius Hybrid PKG #2 Camera Smartkey NEWER HYBRID BATTERY 252k Miles - Car for Sale - Tampa Hybrids Inc.
The one I am looking at is has package 5 and is $500 more but with just about 100K less miles and also a replacement battery with only 26K miles on it. I am a 3.5-4 hour drive from Tampa.
I would look at following: - Press for $3500 or below as it's 11 years old vehicle regardless - check shocks/suspensions (Its $1500 job or DYI $300) - double CHECK Break actuator noise (every 30 seconds pressure valve on/off) - any body damage - 12V battery - Driver Seat condition to see how rough usage of vehicle (Is it big chubby guy loved or 100lbs skinny gal driven)
Thank you. They already made it clear they won't go below $5500 right now. I actually wrote them as soon as they posted it so they did let me know that if they don't get any bites, they will consider lowering it at that point.
I heard back from the Toyota dealership and was told they feel this is overpriced for this car. They told me the will sell me a 2010 Toyota Prius with 129K in immaculate condition for $5500 plus tax, tag, title. It almost sounds like a ploy to get business but the guy said he was going to let his wholesaler have it due to age and mileage. Opinions?
Tallahassee, Fl. Maybe it's just my price range. Cargurus has 6 in my city up to $6K and only 2 are $5500 or less which is my max I can spend and there is 1 by an individual seller in my price range. Not sure if that is a lot or not but the two in my price range on cargurus are 2005. I really need a 2007 or newer as I prefer the side curtain airbags as my kids will be in the backseat.
Craigslist in Tampa has 260 for sale. Most are g2s from 2 to 10000. There’s a 2007 with 15,000 miles For $10000. I see Todd from tampahybrids has a 2007 with 155k for &4500. I see 50 within 50 miles of my zip on eBay. Some really cheap that almost certainly need a battery.A lot of active auctions. Problem with this vintage car with 150k plus miles with original hybrid battery is your staring down the barrel at a new hybrid battery sooner than later and is usually the reason there selling the car. My bought new 2007 at 10 years old at 110000 miles started showing serious hybrid battery deterioration. So keep that in mind. If your a busy mom with children a bad hybrid battery will ruin your day and eliminate all gas savings for years. New factory battery is around $3500 installed. Todd at tampahybrid is a competent battery rebuilder using g3 cells. So I personally would feel good driving away with a battery he has rebuilt compared to anyone else rebuilding it. Search craigslist Tampa Prius newer battery. Failing hybrid battery is almost the most common post we see these days. Right behind posts about the vast mysteries of the little 12 volt battery.
Side curtain airbags were available in some option packages for 2005. Mine is an option 4, and includes those, plus HID headlamps and fogs (no rear cam).
