Combination meter went out on my 2008 Prius last week. Of course we missed the 9 year warranty by 6 months. Decided to pay them the $700 to replace it. It took a week but they gave us a loaner car.
Pick the car up today and first off my wife noticed that the leather on the steering wheel is torn. Then she noticed that the maintenance required light and the red airbag light on the dash is on as well. Not entirely sure what that light means, but I'm sure it is not good and I don't want her driving the car with something wrong with the airbags.
Neither of these lights were on before the combination meter replacement. First response when she called was that these are not related and that something else must be wrong with the car. I don't believe that for a second. We are still waiting to hear back. Thoughts?

I had the same thing happen to my 2008 Prius last night, where the car would not turn off at 1030pm, and I had no idea what to do!

Went to dealership today to find out that the combination meter needs to be replaced, and it is out of warranty by about 9 months, and will cost about $700.

They really should have done a recall on this part if they knew that there were issues with it.

Seeing your post has me nervous about getting the part replaced at the dealership.

Yes, I know parts don't last forever, but when you can't see the odometer or the speed at which you are going, it's more of a serious issue than when something like the radio does not work.

Thinking my next car won't be a toyota,,,,

I agree. The warranty recall extension ended in 2014. I have a 2005 prius and the dealer quoted me a price of 742 dollars to replace the combination meter. I doubt that my next car will be a prius after this experinece

You can find people on craigslist who will repair these for ~200... they will repair the existing combo meter.

I was able to get a goodwill discount with Toyota. Got it done for $400. Then the Prius died a few months later.... waste of money. :(

You'd swear off a brand for that? Keep that up and you'll soon be walking everywhere. There is no more reliable brand than Toyota. But I agree with you that they should probably have at least extended the warranty more. Replacing the CM in every Gen 2 would be a humongous undertaking when the vast majority are fine.

Too bad you didn't know about @Texas Hybrid Batteries (Texas Prius Battery Replacement). You could have saved some money. Matt's a well respected member here. And $150 is a great price.

Help! My 2007 Prius with less than 35,000 miles has a black dashboard and I can't see the speed I'm driving, warning light, gas gauge, etc. This situation is very dangerous. I guess it's the combination meter, but my car has been serviced every year at the local Toyota dealership and nobody every mentioned the extended warranty or potential problem, even though they knew I could not at times remove the key from the ignition or see the dashboard. I am meticulous when it comes to recalls ang got my vehicle in for the floor mat problem, etc.

There are plenty of threads here that show you how to change it. And get a rebuilt one from Texas hybrids, save yourself some $$$
