What kind of hand calculated MPG numbers are you getting?

what are you getting at the pump, without plugging in?

 

Why would anybody in his right mind buy any brand of Hybrid Plug in auto and then not plug in ? I don’t plan on removing the HV battery just to see what mpgs the ICE gets, it’s all integral, affixed, comes with package.
Can you get this info on your 2012 ?

i drove a tank without plugging in, back in the day, and calculated at the pump. fun experiment, but took a lot of self control. i hate driving hv.

However, it is impossible to drive even one trip w/o the automatic EV assist, helping the engine. It’s not possible to drive ICE only........and you did this for a whole tank? If you really did this, which I doubt, you could have hurt the engine.

I'm not quite sure I understand the "premise" of your comment here, but...

...the "best" any of us might do (short of removing the traction battery) to drive "ICE only" would be to make a lengthy road trip in which the battery is starting out so low-on-charge that the car "tells" us there's not enough "juice" to drive in EV mode. I've made ONE such trip so far... a trip that was probably at LEAST 90% HV one way, and probably at LEAST 95% HV returning home. On the roughly 345 mile trip (that's 345 miles each way), I hand-calculated 64.1 mpg going, and 59.2 mpg returning home.

Around town / while running errands, I've gotten as high as 74.2 mpg (CAR's estimate... according to the dash display) on three different trips of 14 to 21 miles with two or three brief (10 to 15 minutes) stops. Even IF that displayed figure was 10% off / 10% high, that's still about 67 mpg....

 

I see what you are saying now. I have never tried that. However, I know when the car is in charge mode, it almost always attempts to charge, if I have run out of EV charge miles, then I go to charge mode. I believe, and I may be wrong but when not in charge mode the car still may charge a bit, but I’m not sure about that. The reason the car is called a hybrid is because of the great synchronization of the ICE and HV battery. I probably would never try your test as I am too parsimonious! The Ice assist the HV battery and the HV battery assist the ICE, n’est pas?

 

Since plug-in completely throws off real mgp for PRIME, I drove my PRIME for a few weeks WITHOUT CHARGING after my last gas fill-up. Without using much of AC or heat, and no HWY driving, just mostly in town drive and daily commute on rural back road average speed of 28MPH, I averaged 66 MPG on display which came out to be ~63 MPG hand calculated. This is far better than my lifetime average 52 mpg for Gen3 Prius. Now I know what PRIME is capable of without any electricity, I am going back to nightly plug-in routine. My next fill-up should be in 2-3 month instead of 2-3 weeks. Only bad thing is that with this result, my break even point for gas vs. electric cost shift more in favor of gas.

 

it uses the battery like a regular hybrid. all the energy comes from gasoline.
