Zinc oxide is a great sunscreen and is cheap. You can buy the poweder and make it yourself for a fraction of the cost of buying prepared sunscreen. In California desert prisons zinc oxide is the product of choice for inmates who are required to spend the majority of most days in "the yard." Chemical sun blockers, which can have serious side effects, are not completely safe.

Former optical lab tech here. Polycabronate, a typical high index plastic, is naturally UV blocking. It is also nearly unbreakable. That's why it is used for signs -- it protects the artwork and defies vandals. And you are right, most lenses are made by a couple of company. But they do produce differing quality products and products aimed at different markets.

when i asked my derm about possible long term effects of what all is in sun blocker, she just laughed at me.
of course, that's because no one knows...

Tenuous link, I know! A former colleague's wife worked in the business and suggested the lenses themselves are fairly cheap to produce, but the largest profit was from the frames. The markup on those was where the real profit was made.

True, especially since the frame market is nearly a monopoly, controlled by the Italian firm Luxottica. They were purchased by the French lens company Essilor last year. The merger is expected to be approved in the US and EU 1Q18.

There's an ironic logic to that, but what is really annoying to me is that of you want to put new lenses in your old frames they ramp the price up to near the same as with new frames!!

Not to bring things down, but my latest dose of reality was seeing a colleague pass away last fall from skin cancer. By the time it was detected it had already spread to his lungs. It was horrible watching him wither away in a matter of a few months. I learned to take skin protection very seriously.

My old optometrist had no problem recycling my frames. But I usually need a new set of full lenses and another set of computer lenses annually, so I think it worked out well for both of us.

There are quite a few eyewear places here that overpromise and underdeliver, he never did.

Online prescription filling for lenses & frames or cheapest over here, but my personal scepticism prevailed so far. Usually it's the high street chain and ~£400 with varifocal lenses for me

With you there. When you have a tricky Rx, it's good to go to someplace with a physical presence.

Varifocals are a unique, patented lens that is aspherical. The shape of the outer lens (the part they don't grind) comes preformed with added magnification which increases from the center of the lens to its maximum power near the bottom edge. Kind of elliptical. Some people cannot adapt to Varifocals. And they are expensive.

I always seem to be a bit different. I have slight long-sightedness with astigmatism in both eyes.

I've got no line progressive lenses, which cost ~$400/set. Pretty reasonable, considering the alternative.

Only read the last few posts...Hubby orders his glasses online. Progressive lenses.

Frames and lenses about $80. They come from Israel. Local shops want about $380-500 for what seems to be the same set-up. He has been doing this for several years. Very happy.

Me, I am happy if I CAN"T see most things!!

Because of low prices some tourists to China buy glasses here. My frames are stamped "ITALY' which means either Luxottica or a 'tribute' local brand.

As an optimist, I would say you just have small feet!!, On the other hand, I can see how that viewpoint could become twisted by certain off-color thinkers....
