TPMS: new Dorman sensors, how to register

    Time for new tires on my 2010 Prius, and I've decided to replace the TPMS sensors at the same time
    One sensor was acting up in the heat of last summer, so I figure 9 years on the batteries is about the limit, and might as well change them when doing the tires.

    I'm planning on using Dorman 974-033 sensors, but am confused about the registration process.
    Dorman has a video on their website saying you replace the sensors, then drive for 5 minutes and they all re-register. Maybe that's not Prius-specific.

    I know I can have the tire shop do the registration, but do I understand correctly that the DIY method is:
    - keep track of the new serial numbers
    - get a Mini VCI cable off Amazon
    - download Techstream to my laptop and register them myself.

    Where in the world are you?

    When you're dealing with a single set of sensors, on a single set of tires, why not just let the tire shop do it?

    Personally, I would just swap over the old sensors, they likely have a few more years. But yeah, if one is for sure acting up, your call.

    I would assume the process would be something like this. I just googled it but I have never done it before.


    My local tire shop would install the tpms for free, but wouldn't do the programming. My other tire shop charges $80 to program. I don't know about the dealership.

    I guess learning how to program it would be useful especially if you have two sets of sensors for winter tires. Buying a VCI would also allow you to pull trouble codes.

    I am in a Similar boat I have my 17"s from my car that got totalled
    Is it better to recode the old sensors to the computer or take all the tires off both rims?
    dealer wants like 200 to do this but also said they woould remove reverse beeps...am willing to buy beer
