Please help. 07 Prius died an hour ago on the road and won't start.

I hope someone has an answer.

I have 230,000 miles on my Prius.

I was just on Route 287, almost on the Tappan Zee bridge when my 07 Prius shut off.
The dash went black, and nothing worked.
I had headlights, and interior lights, and flashers, but nothing else.

I had to be towed off the bridge.

What the heck happened and is there something I can do, or, does it need to go to the dealership/

 

A wild guess is better than what I have so far, which is a dead car. Thank you ! I had it towed to a dealer and will have them check it tomorrow. Thank you very much !

 

The car pretty much didn't work at all.. If it was on the 12 volt battery, wouldn't the gas engine work ?

How do I find and check the large fuse ? Or, is it something the dealer has to do ?

It's not gas. Filled up this morning with a bar and a half left. Fuel pump..... maybe, but, seems to be electrical. If the fuel pump went, wouldn't it work for a little while on electric ?

I hate going to a dealership. I always feel like I was ripped off. That being said, I have never been to the one in Stamford.
Hopefully I get that warm and fuzzy feeling. lol Not probably. lolol

Quick update for you guys on here. Well, half of one anyway.

Went to Stamford Toyota this morning. Spoke with Rich, who seemed very knowledgable about the problem.
His first comment is that it's probably the 12 volt battery. I explained that I had lights, but he still thought it was.
When I said it was the original battery ( almost 11 years old now ) He was surprised and said it almost certainly
was the battery. Most last 3 -5 years.

A few months ago I had problems with my instruments not lighting and then the car not shutting off and the thought
on this forum was the battery. If thats all that it is, I'm very happy.

He also said there were a couple of recalls and they would do the work on them too.

As JC91006 said, I am very pleasantly surprised with these people. If I didn't work part time for Ford, I would
take my Prius to them every time !

I am getting 46 + mpg. On regular tires ( not the special ones ) and doing at least 65 most of the time.
When I slow down a little, it goes almost to 50mpg.
But then, people are shipping past me. lol

 

Final update. Fuse blew because of recall that never got fixed. No charge.

However, Upsale is: I need tires ; and alignment ; 2 front marker bulbs ; an oil change ; and some sort of a piece
in the steering column thats not dangerous, but makes a click or a clunk when I turn. ( I never heard it )
Oh, and both air filters. ( almost 100.00 for them )

Going with the 2 marker bulbs and the oil change.

The best parti of this is, I like the dealership and will probably go back for any other work.

They, and least Rich, did good with me.

I was going from Rockland to Westchester. The car went dead just before I was actually on the bridge.
Another 5 seconds and I would have been on the actual bridge.

As the saying goes, " God watches out for little children and idiots" I am the latter ! lol

 

They want $ 469.00 for the steering shaft. I guess it's not a recall because he checked the recalls. Not going to happen. lol

I don't see a price on the bulbs, so, even though I think I told him to change them, they weren't.

He never asked me if I wanted conventional or synthetic oil. They did conventional and I've been using synthetic.
I hope this doesn't mess anything up. Next oil change will be much sooner than 5000 miles.
And, at Ford again !

Going to pick up bulbs today. Either eBay or Advanced Auto Parts.
And, both air filters.

 

A little funny update.

Got is the car last night. Had problems getting the door to unlock. Thought the battery had had it.
Got is the car and it wouldn't start. Crap ! Not again ! What the heck ? They just fixed it. Or, did they ?
Figured I'd call the dealership this morning.
Used my wife's car. When I got home, I tried it one more time. This time, I happened to put the key fob in the holder.
Car started right up. oops. Have to remember to turn the remote key fob switch back on.
