Looks good, did you do it in place or remove it from the car?

That looks fantastic! I don't get the appeal of the white accents either.

How did you remove the cup holder area? Did you require a trim removal tool?

Yes and no. These make life easier and help reduce the use of expletives.

Take the vertical piece at the back off first. I broke the top center tang.

Pull up with the 2 slots at the aft edge

Disconnect the electrical connectors and release the ty-rap standoffs, one couldn't be released so I used a small pick to release the ty-rap.

Once free, 6 screws hold the bottom of the cup holders to the console assembly.

I can lift the bottom edge of the steering wheel piece but haven't figured out how to fish it out without removing the airbag/horn button.

Perhaps @Elektroingenieur can drop a couple of hints.

Thank you for all the informative pictures and descriptions, this is really helpful!

The hardest part for me is getting a grip on the top part and I'm afraid of using too much force to break it. I'll try again, if can't get a good grip on it will go buy the trim remover tools.

i doubt you can remove the bottom trim just by pulling it ...

as you can see in the picture , the bottom trim and the control assembly is screwed together from behind . i see two screw on the top of the white piece.

@Flaming is correct; the steering pad switch assembly is held in place with two screws. To remove it, the horn button assembly must be removed first, while taking care to follow the airbag system precautions stated in the Repair Manual, available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com.

    It was painted gloss black.

I found it much easier to just buy the applique and wrap that instead. Easier to remove in the future as well if needed.

I just did my steering wheel. I purchased black cover from eBay. It took nearly 2 months to receive it from China. I had pretty much given up hope it would arrive. Gloss black is better than a toilet bowl white, but a flat black color would have matched the wheel better.

Gloss in any colour is going to show fingerprints, scratches. If you're into old-school photography, it's akin to a condenser enlarger: mercilessly showing every scratch and dust speck.

Dark grey, matt, with a texture, is where it's at. Toyota mis-stepped here. The car's interior in the spy shots, with everything draped, looked better, lol.

My console is matte black so there are some reasonable options Still some gloss black trim on the dash though.

It's never too late to pull it off and hit it with some plastidip and see if you like it better that way.

That’s exactly what I want to do! I hate that white part—-totally not in tune with the rest in the area!

I tried wrapping the white plastic around the shifter. Does not look good at the corners. Any tips? Yours looks very professional. Well done!
