Most Obscure Prime Facts (Way Out There)

Today I drove my Prime down a mountain from 6000 feet to 2000 feet. It was in B most of the time. When I started the battery was at 1% and when I finished it was about 60% full. All automatically done.

 

Did you also test out Charge mode?

 

Would it have charged slower if you were not in B mode? I read in other threads that B mode is the same as D+brake in that it has the same effect on regen and efficiency. True or false?

 

The cannot recharge EV greenwashing efforts successfully trickle into ordinary questions. That's quite annoying.

There is *NOT* limitation as they infer.

My proof of this was driving down from Mt. Rushmore. It was very nice to witness firsthand.

 

I have not tried Charge mode.

I take this trip frequently, but always use B as that needs less manual braking. I doubt that D+brake would increase the recharge, but have not tested it.

 

North Carolina also has the same law, but many Tarheels have no idea. New to the state, but wish hands free phones was also required like California. Lots of head on accidents on 2 lane roads in NC. Texting is a real problem.

 

I tried it out the 2nd day after I got my Prime. Tried it after we went to Saturday apple farm in some rather higher hills (~1,100 ft) back to my daughter’s house. Started with 3 EV miles left and still got over 50 mpg, primarily because it’s a mostly shallow decline. Not enough to feed the pack but enough to keep your foot off of the gas. Manually shut it off after the decline stopped (~about 15 minutes) and had over 15 miles EV left. Used that to drive the rest of the way to my daughter’s house and then to mine.

You could feel the whole car sort of get dragged down through the gas pedal and hear the ICE revving a little more. Turning it on reminded me of turning on A/C in an small ICE only car. Got my curiosity out of the way and haven’t used it since. But that may be the only good use case for it for me.

Also wanted to say I used the grocery bag hooks built into the back of the Prime.

 

The screen showing energy distribution accurately shows the 5 groups of main traction batteries layed out front to rear, matching how the pack is really built.

 

Here's an "obscure" tip about Prime Advanced pull-out tonneua cover. All the pictures of cover that I've seen show that the hard, not retractable portion at the back of the cover hanging down when the cover is retracted. That hanging flap is in the way, and blocks a some of the cargo space. Did you know that the flap can be flipped over and tucked under the head rests? That puts the flap out of the way, and looks much nicer. Here's a couple of pictures...

Didn't know about the tucking. That's good to know.

I just remove the entire cover from the car unless I know I'm going to use it. That saves even more room and weight. And no flapping noise when the car hits bumps in the road.

 

AM radio pauses too, at least on my Advanced. If my Garmin requires my focused attention, or whatever, I pause the radio, and can continue listening later. Not used that often on AM as on FM, but still useful; just hold down MODE button on steering wheel. To restore, I just tap the down arrow on the same switch.

I think you're confusing the Mute function with Radio pause with that Mode button hold and up or down volume press.

Mute (the Mode button trick) doesn't stop the radio to continue later. It just cuts out the sound.

Radio Pause function actually pauses the program (shuttles it off into system memory) to resume play later, limited to 15 minutes or less.

 

I think HPprime is talking pause not mute. I did what he did the other day with the mode button and it paused my radio and when I hit it again, it started the song right where it left off. I wish this radio had a rewind feature. I heard there are some radios on the market with that feature now .

 

Radio Pause is activated by The [ II ] button within the radio extra controls. The [ > ] button unpauses. Page 89 of the Prime Nav. Screen manual.

Radio (or any audio) Mute function uses the [ MODE ] button. Must hold that down for ~2 seconds. Volume Up or Down unmutes it. Page 116 of the same manual. The manual says that holding down the [ MODE ] button unmutes, but that has never worked for me, so I just hit the volume up or down on my steering wheel to unmute.

 

I’ll have to go and try that again. I could have sworn that when I tried that the other day it paused. Thanks for the clarification.
