I currently drive a Chrysler Pacifica and have been looking to switch to a Prius. I came across a 2013 Prius Three with 84k miles, at a dealer, the carfax is clean, 1 owner, and it was regularly serviced every 5k miles at the same dealership for it's entirety. It has quite a few more miles than I was hoping for, but I am curious to hear what you all think. They want $12,999 and won't budge on that. 1) Is 84k miles high, low, or medium when it comes to a Prius? 2) Does this sound like a fair price? 3) Are there any common issues that start cropping up at a certain mileage or certain age with gen 3's? Thanks!
You first have to think how many miles you drive per year and how long you want to keep this car. If you drive 30k miles a year, in 4 years you'll have over 200k miles. That's usually where there's more maintenance/issues come on this car.
I got my 2012 Prius on a Black Friday special at $9950 in Santa Cruz last November, and California is one of the more expensive used car states. It had 98,000 miles on it. I figure it's still got 150,000 miles yet to go, so at my typical 10k/year I figure I've got 15 years to drive this car....which means for me buying at 98,000 miles isn't "high miles" yet. However, I think your dealership is way overcharging you for that many miles on the car. My car was tagged at $12,800 before the Black Friday special. I searched on national used car sites (cars and carguru) for a couple weeks before reaching out to drive one at the Santa Cruz dealership. That way I could understand the used car market for this car, both in my area and nationally (because I'd be willing to drive a distance in my huge state or elsewhere to get a great deal). Of course you've got to be careful buying a used car anywhere, but doing this helped me know what the costs I would be looking for in the car I desired. I actually found the Santa Cruz 2012 Prius that I bought on one of those sites. What I discovered was that a 2012 Prius with 60k would be in the $13k range, and a car with 100k miles on it would be in the $10-11k range. Because the Prius drives so long with such a fantastic track record (practically highest in the used car market on consumer guides) I figured I'd save the $3k on the purchase now because 98,000 miles to start wasn't bad for my personal usage needs. Don't pounce....there are lots and lots of used Prius cars, wait for the one that fits your needs! I hope that helps!
welcome! sounds a bit high, but maybe you can talk them down. earlier years, 2010, 11, have had some serious oil burning and head gasket problems. same engine through 2015, not sure if it was corrected in any way.
I have a 2012 original owner prius 3 66,700 miles, 70,000 tires have only 4,000 miles on them... clean record Chicago area asking 12,250 or Best Offer, bought a 17 Prime Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Generally for a Prius, under 100,000 is still considered low mileage, but it depends what you're coming from. If you're Pacifica only has 30,000 miles, 84k miles is a little difficult to call "low." Conversely if you're Pacifica has 150,000 miles then this Prius is certainly an upgrade. Ok now a message that isn't from Captain Obvious. As far as serious mechanical issues to the hybrid system or engine go, there's nothing to be really concerned about at 84k. It's far more likely that you'll have electrical issues (window stops rolling down, display dies, radio stops working, etc), but those things can happen at any point during the car's life and with any car you buy. I can't say for sure whether it's a fair deal because it depends where you live, how hard you've been looking, etc. I can say though that you should go with your gut. If you don't love the car, don't buy it. The world's richest people say to "buy experiences, not stuff." Is a Prius (or "this" Prius) going to be an "experience" for you? It sounds like it might be. If so, while it is nice to get the best deal you can, there's also no need to sweat a few hundred dollars. Just enjoy.
Price is super high, don't sweat mileage like that, just make sure to change all fluids, plugs, filters. My 2013 at 80~miles was $9k financed in a pinch and bought it from the dealer. Craigslist has lots of 2010's with the same mileage for $5-6 thousand in my parts
Sounds high to me. Paid a few dollars less than that for my '12 Plug-in Advanced with 36,000 miles 11 months ago. But you are the one to decide if it is worth that to you.
Paid $13,600 for a Certified 2014 Prius 3 with 49K miles yesterday. Was looking for a 2012 to keep the price down since this will be a 5th car for myself (yes, I'm crazy) but all the 2012's I was finding were almost the same price with 15-20K more miles. For $1k more I couldn't pass up getting 10K+ less miles, 2 years newer AND Toyota Certified.
Btw OP, the problem with posting your question here is that you get all of us responding who are bragging about the exceptional deals we got, so you may want to keep that in mind as you decide.
I think its too much. 10k should be reasonable cause milage is very low. If you do decide to buy it at least get some proper maintenance done by dealer such as coolant flush etc... . het the egr valve replaced under warranty and make them clean the egr cooler or replace it. Even if its not the time yet.
I paid 11,5 for mine. 2014 with 87k miles. I mostly paid attention to the service records/number of owners and condition of mine vs being worried about miles. People by these for commuters so most times the miles are highway miles. I think the price is kind of high but Im sure they have room to bring it down.
