2010 Prius Knocking (Raptor Sound)

Any updates? This thread seemed to have some interesting theories, I too suspect some of the knock sound comes from the transaxle, but the hesitation/misfire is definitely from the engine.

Have similar issues with my Auris Hybrid 2010 here in Netherlands. Also swaped and changed serveral parts at the dealer (warranty). Strange thing in my case is that the issue most of the time only appears with fully warmed up engine, after switching between ev and ice (at traffic lights or roundabout) and only in rain or mist.

Dealer don't know anymore... I'll drive around with techstream to capture so the dealer can see this file and eventually send it to Toyota

DG Bear, I think I have the exact same issue you have.

Back around 375k miles, I had a blown head gasket. After it was repaired, I started getting a vibration very similar to the cold soak start up shudders, but it was while driving. I noticed it always seems to happen as the car transitions from EV mode to hybrid mode (where the ICE kicks in). Once enough throttle is applied, it stops.

If you allow the hybrid battery to get low, you get it nearly all the time except upon strong throttle input. Eventually, I also started to get it at idle when the battery is low and is being charged by the ICE. Also, no CEL for this.

Since around 440k miles or so, I've started to notice a lesser version of the vibration creeping in when on the road at a steady speed (I use cruise control at 60 MPH most of my driving).


My mechanic and I test drove the car in circles for what seemed like 45 minutes to an hour. I was reproducing the sound/vibration, and he was using "chassis ears" microphones to pinpoint the sound. We were able to determine the sound is from the transmission. His theory is that a spring on one of those clutch plates may have dislocated or is damaged/worn now, and is allowing vibration is become very audible whenever the ICE kicks in at the very early engagement point. Heavy throttle forces the clutch to make full contact which reduces the sound.

He feels that since Toyota doesn't sell parts for the transmission, that my only solution is to replace the whole unit.


Some info on my car for reference:

• 2014 Lexus CT 200h
• Current mileage: 458k miles
• All maintenance is done per factory schedule except for:
  • Oil change is every 15k miles
  • Transmission fluid every 100k miles
  • Engine air filter at every 80k miles (takes a long time for it to get dirty)

 

Was the first transaxle fluid change at 100K? I would suggest the first change around 10K.

 

Nope. I was going to follow Toyota's recommendation up until the point various threads on PriusChat convinced me that since I am going super high mileage, I should probably change it.

First change was at 47k miles, then at 100k, then every 100k afterwards.

 

Hello guys,
Please help me i am having same hashing sound like when you put something in running fan. This sound appears only at high RPM if i reduce gas the sound is gone also engine vibration at some certain rpm / speed. Few days back i was having misfires and unfortunately my manifold. I also saw temperature light for few times it appears and gone when I reduced speed.
what i have done so foe is
Clean egr
Clean manifold
Clean catalytic
My manifold was burnt out so I replaced.

 

How many miles are on the odometer? Did you change your PCV valve when you cleaned your intake manifold?

Its 300km on ODO and i didnot changed pcv.

 

Any Check Engine light error lights on the dashboard? If yes, then you should get your codes read.

A sound like that might be as simple as a loose heat shield.

Which manifold, and "burnt out" how?
