Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Looked at mine today (I do every Saturday) and the clear hose is stained:(.

    But after ~2k miles, less than 1/16” of level on the dipstick :).

    I would go to Lowes and pick up the $4 pack. It’ll last you a good bit;).

    But increase the residence time to keep it in the can and prevent it from going further(y).

    I have been looking at a lot of different oil catch cans and saw that the mishimoto is using a brass filter like the one's you see on air compressors. These are used for removing water and oil so they don't blow through your paint sprayer or tools. I am wondering if i could drill and tap 1/4 npt into the ruien occ and use these filters I found on amazon.

    I picked this one up at Harbor Freight - item 68230

    Packaging says it has a 40 micron brass filter element.
    Filter element itself is 23mm OD, 33mm long

    The drain at the bottom of the clear bowl was designed for air pressure use. I had to remove the parts & plug the fitting with JB Weld. I haven't tried it yet. I want to try it after a much improved OCC, in series with the OCC output. I'm afraid if used alone this unit would fill up quite fast.

    This is follow up, after 1000 miles, I am Uber driver ( about 300 miles/day, 9000miles/month), so I check OCC every morning and see it's clean now. I also found a mug which is fit to my OCC. The MPG goes up from 45 to 51. I am watching the engine oil consumption.

    I still have one of those from 10 years ago that I bought for my Integra as secondary OCC filter but never end up using it. :)
    I thought about putting it in Prius after OCC but not sure if I want another piece of filter.

    Dang, my mesh filter is 100 Mesh(150 Micron). I should find finer one. :)

    I'll stop by Lowe's when I have a chance. I do, actually my wife, has a pack of 0000 fine steel wool under the kitchen sink :) but I think it's too thin/fine and thick to use it in the can. Maybe it might be ok.

    FWIW, the top of the Moroso has about an inch of dense packed steel mesh. I'm not sure if stuff is getting through the can. It is catching a fair bit though. I've seen a video where it was set up in series with a competitor OCC, and when the other was downstream it did catch some more.

    Uhhh. I drove the prius 130 miles today with 75 mph speeds. I went to check my occ today after work and noticed it was bone dry at the bottom maybe a couple of drops of oil lingering at the top around the baffle. I did an oil change on sat using 5w20 and added about 200ml of liqui moly. I am not sure if it is the new oil change or the moly. Has any one used this stuff before. I saw a giant sticker advertising this snake oil a couple of weeks ago and googled it when I was working by this small euro mechanic shop. The weather was 35ish this morning with 55 degree on the drive home. I did buy a 1/4 npt tap and some of those brass filters today and will install it when it arrives. I did not relocate the pcv just yet. Still reading to see if anyone else has done anything like this on the web.

    Relocating the valve to after the OCC should help keep it clean. The drawback is that it probably would block the draining of the intake manifold on shut-off for those that have the OCC mounted below.

    I used a 3/8 tap. Then used a 3/8 to 1/4 npt reducer and installed the 1/4 brass filter and swapped the hoses to the occ. I wanted the filter to protect the intake manifold and I will see how it separates the oil/water/fuel. I put some black rtv where the dipstick came out. It is a little cockeyed, tapped it by hand and eye balled it. I had a 1/4 of a teaspoon worth of fuel/water in the catch from 450 miles driven this week and emptied it and will monitor the progress. This is my ghetto mishimoto occ.

    I added it. The cone of shame is 3d printed and the stainless pads are just funny business to defuse the mucus coming from the pcv. The brass filter side, feeds the intake plenum/manifold. I kinda of copied the mishimoto one above. I asked questions on amazon regarding if the brass was washable and asked it it filtered all the oil out. I have received email replies from the manufacturer (mishimoto sells these through amazon direct) and customers on how great it was and it is washable. We will see.

    So the 3D printed part is simply a compression fit to the OD of the screw-on input area?

    It was 35 degrees outside avg all day with 4 start stops in 120 miles driven. When I got home from work, I removed the stained hose and replaced it with new clear/clean 3/8 hose. This is the hose that comes out of the catch can and into the intake plenum. I found a very very small amount of oil under the throttle body in the intake plenum. This is there prior to installing the brass 40 micron filter yesterday in pic above. I cleaned it out with a shop rag while opening the butterfly. It looked like maybe a teaspoon's worth. The catch can had what smelled like fuel and water inside (khaki colored juices) with a hint of oil. I noticed the brass filter had moisture on it inside the can. The hose going to the intake plenum was dry. So far so good. I will monitor the hose to see if it changes in color due to oil passing through the new brass filter I installed. If successful, I would love to see if the brass 40 micron filter keep this hose clear as I put miles on it. This is so exciting.

    174.8 miles driven today, hose is clear and dry.:) I hit speeds with 75mph in the morning and hit mad traffic on the way home. I made 6 stops today.

    Is that outlet filter going to impact flow too much though? Not sure.

    I've seen one at least one application of the moroso can (they have custom brackets for various vehicles, same can) where they gang-install a pair: whatever gets by the first is caught by the second. Getting pricey though. Maybe you could do similar though, with cheaper cans. Maybe a large primary can, and a smaller secondary one.

    That's a very good make-shift setup btw, a good labyrinth on the inlet side, all the way down, looks very effective.
