Thanks - I'm starting thinking about my next car - which won't be for another couple of years, but I'd been thinking it might be a PHEV of some sort (and because TOYOTA hasn't plans to bring one here, it might well be another make - but in 2 years, I think the whole car landscape will have changed).
I’ve gotten a 75% charge from empty traveling down the Beartooth in a Gen I Volt. I have no doubt you could fill a prime going through this same area.
I regularly drive my Prime down a 4800 foot hill and it regenerates the battery to 60 or 65% full. I use up all the EV battery portion going up, and the ICE takes over for the last part of the up trip.
Yes. This is how regen works. It works the same on both models. The big difference is that the Prime has a bigger battery so you get more storage during regen. I wish I had a bigger battery on mine. I do go up and down some significant hills. We call them mountains.
I was in the same boat but I opted in for the 2014 PiP Advance. Sounds crazy but it was a little cheaper even after the rebates of the Prime, up to 5 passengers, and the trunk space was the closer for me. I have young kids and the Prime didn’t fit that family need. Cant even fit a decent stroller back there and other big items when I tested it. Yes, the Prime does well in total MPGe, more stylish but in the end, PiP does quite well for my needs.
I can get my 2012 to fill up 60% or so on the big mountains we have here (Utah). I have seen a few times where battery is taking in too much current (heat) and stops recharging. The engine kicks on to do engine braking. If I could not plug in I would save money and just get the normal Prius. The new one is a great car and can get some great MPG.
Looks like Toyota cut off cash back incentive for Prime, at least in NE. It now have only 0% APR financing for 72 mo. But still no sign of 2018 models. New Car Deals | Local Toyota Deals, Incentives & Special Offers
I also have kids and I think the PiP is a better fit. EPA cargo and passenger volumes are bigger for the PiP than the Prime.
That's strange. At toyota.com with NE location input, cash back was never higher than $3250, and it ended on Jan 31. Current regional special shows only 0% APR for 72 mo. Maybe dealer specific local offers???
no way to tell. they say $3,000. on the prime, then $750. specific packages. i got a quote of $25,000. net on a prime premium, but that was in late january. have you checked ny/nj? i could have sworn someone just got 4k back.
