Oil Analysis Results, Motul 0w-40 5k miles

    Just posting this here in case anyone was curious. Seems like I have quite a bit more life in this oil, I'll let it go longer this time.

    I've been using Motul for years now in all of my cars, mostly turbocharged. Seems to work well in the Prius too!

    i suspect the oci's are just a scam run by the oil companies, in cahoots with mfg's.

    Just a holdover from the old days with dinosaur oil and poor additives. I've been changing at 5k miles until I had this done, now that I have the data I'll do it again at 8k and see how it looks!

    you have one of the 'oil burning, head gasket blowing' models. how many miles on her?

    About 98k currently, nearly all highway. It doesn't burn a drop of oil, yet. I'll be installing a catch can as soon as its warm enough outside!

    Looks like the Boron, Calcium, Phosphorus and Zinc results are a little high, are those part of the additive pack and or the TBN results?

    Also noticed the flash point was on the low side, is that a Motul thing?

    All add-pack. It's actually a nice looking add-pack with specific regard to keeping oil control rings clean, IMO. Only a nice shot of moly would bring it to pretty much exactly what I look for in an oil. The wear metals are the top 5 in the list, and are about as low as you will ever see.

    I think their averages are based on the higher mileage he mentions in the remarks. I assume that because my levels are across the board almost half of the average, with the average mileage on this type of oil being double.

    If that's not the case, the wear metal levels I'm seeing are fantastic.

    m.wynn, what benefits would I see from a moly additive during an oil change?

    I wouldn't say you'd see any benefits at all. If you compare your UOA to this series of UOAs from szgabor, it's looks as if your Motul did a tad better even though you're at double the mileage. His runs were all moly-based TGMO and M1. Yours is an excellent Prius (and likely any hybrid) UOA.

    I'm not saying moly based add-packs are better, they're just personal preference. Plenty of fantastic oils out there with lots of 0's in the anti-wear columns.

    I forgot to add to the original post...

    This analysis is after doing two autocross events, and one 1k mile all highway road trip. I haven't been easy on the car doing more than a few full throttle starts.

    Has a boatload of calcium so that batch would probably be fine for 20,000 miles. I prefer no additives in my engine oil and periodic check of tan.
    So thats 2 sides of the coin super long life or high performance. Calcium is a wear agent but the best acid mitigation for long life.
    .

    But if your driving the car hard you would be better off with a product like Redline which is pure 100% synthetic oil no package no nothing.
    Zero wear. Will take extreme punishment.

    Google Redline Oil.

    Btw, why are you using 40 weight?

    Nice to see someone else using 0W-40. I am using Mobil 1 0W-40 oil and Prius seems to have no issue, average 50 mpg.
