I just took delivery on a 2006 Prius (Pkg #3). I love everything about this car. I am puzzled, however, why Toyota is trying to protect me from crashing the car by disabling the MP3 data while the car is in motion. I'd love to hear any news on this topic (e.g. Toyota's position, hacks to diasble, etc.).

    Thanks,
    Scott

There's a couple of speed sensor wires (one for the NAV and one for BT) that you can cut, and add switches. By flipping them to the "off" position, you should have your data. I don't know what the #3 package has, but I've found that the BT wire also takes care of the MSG button in the '05.

Welcome to the club! :) And while you're at it, be sure to join the San Diego Prius Club.

Do some searches on PC - with a small modification, you can make the NAV system give you access. I have not tried the mods, but others have.

    Cheers, :)

Hey szannes0. It seems me and you are the only two asking this question. Everyone has packages with navigation, and could care less about the MP3s. In looking this up myself, the only thing I've found is this:

    http://darelldd.com/ev/prius_speed_wire.htm

You basically are tricking the MFD into not knowing weither you are driving or not. I assume this means it won't read out the MPG to you.

Actually, a lot of Prians ask this question. It impacts the (bluetooth) phonebook, MP3 playback, and navigation system.

As you found, the best approach is the mod by darelldd and others.

    Rock on! :)

While i haven't done the mod yet, i'd be extremely surprised if it knocked out the MPG readout... That should be coming into the MFD on a data wire from the computer, where as i believe the speed sensor wire is a more simple on/off type thing.

Also, i find it hard to believe that so many people would perform this mod if it knocked that out

Ahhh, let me explain a bit more on that mod, as I have done the one in question (for the BT). You put a switch in, so it's not permanently off. When the switch is in the Off position, the car thinks it's stopped (like at a stoplight). The little wheels on the Energy screen don't turn, and the bars on the Consumption screen act as if you were sitting in Ready all that time and not moving (ie, if you had it off for 5 minutes you'd have 0 mpg for that time). Most of the time you'd flip the switch Off for about 30 seconds, get your information (or enter data) and then flip it back On, so you don't really lose any data. Take a look at http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v437/aaf...us/IMG_2898.jpg and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v437/aaf...us/IMG_2901.jpg in order to see where I put my switch. I used a push on-push off for mine, but some have installed a magnetic switch (as it's more invisible).

Oh, and the BT mod will also let you read any message that an FM station is sending while the car is in motion too.

Thanks! Now I have to come to grips with ripping apart my new car and putting a switch somewhere inconspicuous.
