If you turn it off when you walk up to car it stays locked . Also you have to hold the key to the start button to start it. Leave it on and the car senses the key. Drivers door unlocks and you can leave key in pocket and just press button to start. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
That's the smart key system (electronic key). Because the car is looking for the electronic key fob, it can drain the 12V battery. If you're going on vacation, then you can tell the car not to look for the key and turn it off.
