I have a 2006 Prius with 2 smart keys both with new batteries. One does everything it should lock /unlock & start without inserting. The other starts without inserting but does not lock / unlock. Any suggestions on what is wrong and how to fix would be appreciated.
The rubber membrane with the buttons may have degraded. If so, a replacement case would solve the problem.
Sorry for talking such a long time for getting back. The 2005 not 6 Prius 2 was purchase about 7 years ago but no one every noticed any problems with the keys. until recently. They both worked when purchased. More info: Car is Sister-in-laws, This past summer she loaned it to her daughter for 2 months, when out of town. When she got it back A/ C was not working. Immediately took it to deal and had 2 A/C motors replaced. When she got it back dash lights would not dim and at night a green bar is reflected on the windshield. As she does not drive it at night she did not notice this for weeks. Tried to fix the dash lights but could not figure out how to remove the left air vent to check for a disconnected wire. Both keys did not work replaced batteries pressed button under steering wheel, one works fine now the other does not lock or unlock. Any help appreciated. Rubber membrane does not appear deteriorated, but where would one get a new case?
You should bring it back to the dealer to fix the dimming problem, if they caused it, they should fix it. The vents are easy to remove (YouTube videos), but the center vent where the gear shifter is located is prone to breaking if you're not careful. As for the key that's not working, try doing the "chicken dance", in duplicating the working key.
I have two OEM proximity remotes in a bedroom in my drawer. On unlocks the car, the other can start the car. But neither do both. I changed batteries and did the "Chicken Dance" and it was to no avail. After a lot of fruitless labor trying to get the remotes to fully function I decided to retire the and buy two new ones. IMHO, you'll be better served by buying new ones if you can't recover the two remotes. When I bit the bullet and drove home with two new ones from the Dealer I muttered things all the way home. But now it's been a couple of years and the buyers remorse has dissipated. I now feel I've received value when I replaced the remotes.
Buy a new case, put the circuit board from the lock/unlock capable fob in it. Add the transponder chip from the plug in capable fob. Bingo. Fully functional keyfob for the cost of a replacement case. Now add a single new keyfob from an online dealer and chicken dance it yourself.
I bought a refurbished fob and it still does not lock or unlock with remote why ? Ireprogramed it also
Not sure if you have a 2 button or 3 button (2+1) fob. Saw a 3 button case without the uncut key blade for $6.22 delivered. If needed for dollar more you can get one with the key blade. Since there are a few sellers within .50 cents of each other be sure to read the reviews and ratings first, also check the estimated delivery date as some might offer an earlier shipping window. I'm not aware of there being a refurbished fob for Gen2. The unlock/virginize process is only available for 2010+ versions. There are two types of Gen2 fobs, Black Logo (non-SKS) and Silver Logo (SKS). Both will work plugged into the dash, but the lock/unlock functions have to match the vehicle. Silver(SKS) is for cars with the black buttons on the front door handles. Note that it is the circuit board inside the fob that determines if it is SKS or non-SKS. The logo panel could be switched just to make things interesting.
