    Gotta love this area (in the summer).

    Agree with the comment about chargers being a waste: 220/110 equipment should be in the car, not on the wall. That way any electric dryer outlet or range outlet could be instant power. And manufacturers could compete on the basis of the type of equipment that are on their cars -- cars for the poor could be 110 volts. 220 volts for the middle class. Really rich folk could even get 480 volt three phase. Or a 27kV model for 10-second charging (with Techron, of course!). Eventually batteries will be recharged by the free potential in the air, or by Mr. Fusion.

    At least the Canadian's have Ave to help them out. He could make it chooch with angry pixels at any voltage.

    You'd be surprised, it's not.

    People have the notion that they're not plugging in until it's -20°C and by then the excuse is "it's too cold" and the result is the use of a remote engine starter (Which manufacturers like Honda have started including as standard equipment on higher trim levels).

    Personally, I'm thrilled with the title of this thread. I'm going to retire in Richmond, and currently have a condo there. I'd love to be able to charge a PHEV in the future in my parking spot. I spent a lot of time in Toronto and didn't miss having a car. For me, a car is more important in Vancouver/Richmond.

    I disagree. It's the most convenient, probably, but hardly the most efficient. All that money and all that space to build multi-lane roads to handle peak capacity, to move an average one person per vehicle? More like the least efficient.

    From a Wikipedia article on energy efficiency in transport

    Bicycles 760 mpg US (equivalent)
    Walking 360 mpg US (equivalent)


    But I assume you mean modes of transportation that people really use in the US (also from the Wikipedia article and lower numbers of BTU per mile and MJ per mile are more efficient)

    The US transport Energy Data Book states the following figures for passenger transport in 2009:

    So that puts cars in 6th place or even lower if one considers walking or bicycles as a "real" transportation mode.

    There is a dumbing down on efficiency here ;-) mpg is a poor measure, and on bicycles and walking I'll hazzard to say on a hundred mile trip, my fuel (food) is much more expensive than in a prius, and what about the time.

    Definitely the winner here. Not making a trip is the most efficient if you can. But often that is not practicable.

    I'm assuming this apartment market is fairly on the luxury end, not something that you would find say in indoneasia. For new construction I doubt it adds much to the costs when amortized over the life of the unit. But we have to remember high end apartments are not everywhere. There are a lot of appartment and condo units going up on my part of town, the east side of austin. The city has decided these don't even need parking spots for everyone, requiring spots and chargers for every apartment would probably cut into developer profits, and might see fewer homes being crushed, so I can't say the requirement is a bad one.

    Throw in electrically-assisted bikes and the bikes will come out a bit more favourable (Because you're able to carry cargo and weight limit will be higher because the electric motor and battery will help with acceleration and going up hills)
