Second coldest & snowiest month in Minnesota history was December 2000... which is when I had my first Prius. It dealt with that mess like a champion.

Now, 4 upgrades later, the experience is with the Prime... in the freaky cold. No big deal. Another Prius success.

And getting way better gas mileage than in a gasser. And wait till gas goes back up to $4/gallon!

I decided to run my ICE for a bit on the way to work this morning for some heat. Crap!!!! Only got 168 mpg. Shooda bought a Jeep. :ROFLMAO:

yeah, buying a hybrid to save money doesn't always prove out, especially a lexus.

The primary purpose of the first few generations of Prius was to reduce emissions. Significantly improved efficiency was secondary. Now, it's a bit of the mix with the plug-in.

agreed. but some see it as primarily to save money. i suppose when gas was four bucks, they saw dollar signs.

Come on guys give me some love. Why the Ct over a regular Prius? The other cars in the family are a Cooper and a Golf TDI the Hybrid needed to be somewhat fun to drive or it would last pick in the morning and yes I'm all about fuel efficient 4 cylinders. I was just saying hauling a heavy battery around in these northern climates may not be worth it. Especially the plug in variety.

The CT is nice. I've test driven it twice and one of them was in the dead of winter. It handles well and it's easy to park. The Gen 4 Prius would give you that too with the updated chassis, laser screw weld (same as what Lexus uses) and the new double wishbone rear suspension. But yeah, the CT does look better than the Gen 4 (but I love the Gen 4's taillights - so cool).

It depends. I mean, looking at the negative (winter months) and ignoring the positives (the summer months) isn't a good way to look at it. You're still saving money for at least half a year and even in the winter months, you're still up over a conventional hybrid. You can pre-heat the cabin to get it warm (well around -10°C anyway. At -20°C.... it might not work that well). Even if the engine runs for heat, you still have a battery that can be used for EV driving so your emissions are still lower.

The Prius critics tried to use their ‘hybrid premium’ to justify their pathological objection to the Prius. Yet these same hypocrites waxed on the glories of upgraded car audio, fancy options, and faux leather seats. Meanwhile ignoring the quality of stock Prius alloy wheels and audio that did not have to compete with engine noise. <GERRR>
Of course we 'love you' given this is a Prius Prime forum and "Ct over a regular Prius". Then there is proof of being a troll:

"The other cars in the family are a Cooper and a Golf TDI the Hybrid needed to be somewhat fun to drive or it would last pick in the morning and yes I'm all about fuel efficient 4 cylinders. I was just saying hauling a heavy battery around in these northern climates may not be worth it. Especially the plug in variety."

Not sure how the post you quoted was trollish. Just because he doesn't share the same type of vehicle preference doesn't make him a troll.

And honestly, after driving a MINI Cooper or a Golf, yeah the Gen 3 Prius would feel like a wet blanket. I'm not gonna deny that. The steering ratio is slower than the Gen 2 and it still leans into corners.

If not trollish, then poor judgement of wandering into the Prius Prime sandbox and dragging in some kind of Lexus. There could be 101 other aspects of his Lexus causing his grief having nothing to do with "hauling a heavy battery around in these northern climates may not be worth it."

It is galling because @john1701a and I both recently shared Youtube videos of Prius Primes getting excellent mileage 60-80 MPG in 6 to 14F (-14 to -10C). We are mapping out the Prius Prime control laws in cold weather to achieve stellar mileage. Then in comes this Lexus sharing nothing of the Prius Prime architecture and its massive battery.

Sometimes I get impatient with those who should know better. Regardless, I'll moderate my earlier posting and update my ignore user list.

I got great new footage at 3°F this morning on my commute to work. Drove for two blocks with electric-heat, then it switched over when the engine turned on. 18.5 miles. 67 MPG.

I don't think Prius owners are the only ones struggling a little with the low temperatures. I just saw this on Facebook:

So why exactly did you ask this question in the plug in prime section? The ct200h is just the heavier luxury version of the third gen Prius with IRS. Third gen section is probably more appropriate for answers.

Well, now that we in coastal south carolina have had long lasting enough snow/ice to get a good feel for the Prime and icy roads, there's one thing that I haven't seen mentioned with regards to the Prime, in EV or HV. On the very worst icy roads, the car is much easier to get going and not overreact with the throttle if you switch to HV Mode (and eco) It just has too much very low end power and too quick of throttle response on the low end in EV mode. In HV mode, it's a little better than my gen 3 prius with 17" wheels, but in EV mode, it's more nerve wracking than it needs to be.

I kind of wish we had a low power EV mode like I think Europe gets with EVCity.
