Trip button and A and B Trip

I don't go into all the "Eco" charts and graphs on the big screen. They confuse me.

I need to keep things very simple. After I get gas, I press the little button on the steering wheel and reset Trip A to zero. Then I start driving, and it shows me how many miles I've gone and what my MPG is.

End of story. I'm happy.

 

I rest the Trip A every time a fill up with gas and calculate MPG. I reset the Trip B everything I have an oil change to track miles between service.

I have Prius Prime Plus. what does the info about all the trip option mean besides trip A, B?

There is Trip A and B that make sense but then there is a car with a flag arrow and usually 199.9mpg next to it, what does that do/mean?

 

Just the current trip. It resets/Zeros when you POWER OFF. So if you drive for many hours without turning it off, it will record it all as "a trip".

There was a lot of discussion a LONG time ago about it, and one of the best ideas was to use them:

• TRIP A - ZERO it when you re-fuel;
• TRIP B - use if you're going on "a trip", like a fortnight's holiday or a trip across the nation, ZERO it before you leave;
• AND - the CarWithTheFlag - if you stop 20 times during a day's driving, it will reset each time you re-start.

But there were many other ways people use them - I use the one I've listed.

 

This is the forum for the Generation 4 Prius Liftback, not the Prime. Although the Prime is based off the Gen 4, many thinks may be different.

Usually the display information is documented in the user manual set you received with your car. The Toyota owners site has online PDFs of the manuals too.

 

I've never reset my "B" trip. That gives me lifetime numbers, although it drops off the ten thousands number (currently reads 8,000 for 28,000 miles). but the data doesn't reset.

 

Only thing, they're bogus numbers, to the tune of 5~10%, and: if you ever disconnect the battery without a memory saver (something I do intentionally when doing brake inspection, for example), I'd wager Trip B will be gone.

Curious. Which memory saver do you have, Mendel? I think I'm going to try to get one before checking my wife's front caliper slide pins so she doesn't have to reprogram the radio and all that jazz. I'm wondering if this would be sufficient, since I have an extra UPS battery available.

 

I have a cord that has obd plug at one end, and cig lighter connector at the other, which I plug into cig lighter socket on my jump pack. The jump pack I lay in the driver's foot well, works well. It's this:

The above has one status light, which will light up if either end has voltage. There are some a little more rolls royce, with a status light for both ends. But what I have works: tentatively plug in just one end, then just the other, and if the light lit both times, you know you'll be ok.

 

Thanks! I did see one that plugs into the cig lighter and looks exactly like yours. I figured that the clips would be more practical for me since I don't have a jump pack with cig lighter connector. After more thorough reading of the product description for the one I was looking at, I'm not sure I want it if the quality of design and construction is anything like the quality of the English used for the descriptions.

They do have the ESA 30, though for nearly the same price.

From comments made here, I am a bit confused. Is there a difference beyond being unique between Trip A and Trip B with respect to resets and battery loss. I seem to do it backwards from you folks. I reset Trip B on every tank and leave Trip A for lifetime. BTW if it matters I have a Prius 2.

 

It's a matter of nomenclature - your choice.

 

It did on my 08' gen2, but not sure as yet on my new Prius 2. Speaking of the 12v battery, I would occasionally have something in the system which was acting strangely and a cause wasn't really obvious, disconnecting the 12v aux battery for a few minutes then reconnecting serves to do a "cold reboot" of the system computers and the problem would usually be gone. It was during one of these that I noticed that both tripmeters would default to zero, but the main Odometer would retain its reading.

 

Trip A is reset with every tank. Trip B is reset with every oil change. At least, that's what I'm doing...
