Has anyone here just given up on Toyota and the dealerships and replaced their HID headlights for the halogens? I keep getting pulled over by the police for that one headlight that goes off and on and have so far avoided a ticket because by now, in Southern California, most of the cops know about the Prius HID problem, at least where I drive. Are there issues that affect the conversion? Can I just replace the HId bulbs for Halogen or is there a ballast and other equipment that needs to be taken care of? My '06 has 180,000 on it so I know there isnt any warranty coverage on it. Please help.
Before you do that, have you replaced your HID bulbs (capsules)? It's easier to change the HID capsules than to switch the assemblies for halogen. Tom
Check out the thread How to convert from HID to halogen. I commented on how I accomplished this on my '06.
You have to rewire part of the wiring harness to mate with an H4 bulb connector and swap the HID housings (complete headlamp assembly) for Halogen housings but not too difficult. I've done it a bunch of times. You can buy new aftermarket Halogen housings cheap on Ebay and sell your used OEM HID housings on Ebay (assuming your housings are still decent). You may even come out ahead money wise.
I actually plan to post my old HID assemblies on ebay sometime. If anyone wants first dibs, let me know!
