A recent tradegy over here when an Audi Q7 accidently drove down a slipway and almost an entire family drowned because the would-be rescuers couldn't break the 'bulging' laminated side windows in the submerged vehicle.

An obscure fact question. I live in rainy Vancouver. Normally I would start the car, and if the windows were fogged on the outside or obscured by rain, I would lower and raise the windows so the rubber would squeegie the moisture off. This doesn't work in my Technology Advanced Prius. Am I missing something?

Nor in mine. Best thing is when you get above a certain wind speed they clear themselves!

Here's an image on how to tell if the glass is laminated (link below - the top down view should clearly show the layers). I would imagine it would be labeled with some additional details on the glass itself? It's typically a more expensive luxury option and was curious if we had that here in the states too. Part of me just likes to know exactly what differences are between the models...:)

Except when you have to navigate your way out of your driveway and you can't see left or right.

This requires an element of planning in advance of entering your car, but you could try a small squeegee. I've used a small sponge, but that was bad for the inside of the car afterwards. In a bag, it soon starts to stink and without a container is a bit too damp!

I have laminated front side glass in my UK Excel model, they also have a rain repellant coating too :)

No. They haven't done that since Gen 3. The window moves away from the dust protector that usually squeegees the windows when it's rolling up/down. (at least on my 3rd Gen)

Toyota removed the water-repellent coating option on the Gen 4 for North America (actually it was only available for two years on Gen 3. I have it on mine. It mostly works but the dust and oil build up quickly so it loses its repellency until I clean the window ... actually clean it with car wash soap)

Perhaps the feature was prone to freezing up and stretching/tearing the strip previously in your subarctic winters.

Possibly or the market didn't appreciate the feature? It was also available in the US and they removed it at the same time we did (our models tend to mimic one another since certification for a Canadian-specific model is expensive so we usually get whatever the US approves).

From my understanding, the water-repellent coating is just that - a coating on the window and it will wear out over time. It just lasts much, much longer than aftermarket treatments such as Rain-X (I think that one requires an annual touch-up but it works well).

I'm still a newb and haven't even cracked my owners bible yet so I don't know if this is obscure or not. I didn't see it in the thread before this post.

So I needed something out of the car today, I unlocked the car and left the keys inside the house. I walked out onto the carport and went up the driveway to check the mail. The car was unlocked when I hit the button on the key fob because I heard it. When I was walking back down the driveway, as I got closer to the car (keys inside the house - a good 20 feet away), the car beeped at me once. I didn't think anything of it and went to get what I needed out of the car and the door had locked itself back.

I guess that if you unlock the car and don't open a door within a certain time period, it relocks itself? I thought it was neat.

The laminate front side windows now explains why there was a couple of shapes on the side glass that I couldn't remove back when I was cleaning the glass. Initially thought the window tinter perhaps used too much heat .

while playing with buttons waiting in a drive though tonight, on the prime advanced, if you hit the parallel park button, it starts the feature on the MID display. press it again, and it turns into backing into a normal parking spot. never knew there were 2 auto parks.

Yes, definitely - I think my last 3 cars, possibly 4, did the same thing.

The owners handbook is great reading - a great way to get to sleep!! But it does have much useful information.

That’s correct! I set mine to 30 seconds. I’m happy to finally have this feature so I won’t worry about accidentally unlocking the car from my pocket. My mother’s old 2002 Lexus IS300 had this feature as well, but my 2015 Subaru did not! I never understood that.

Well even our Touring (equivalent to Three Touring in the US) doesn't seem to do it.

Does that have the better seats or were they reserved for Trim Four?
