Not to derail the thread, but I consider the length of the standard, four-year military enlistment period a primary reason that although the Bush Adm and all their Republican buddies deride Democrats (and anyone else) with the idea of setting a timetable to get out of Iraq as 'helping the enemy' by wanting to 'cut and run' they, in fact, are planning on doing exactly that in the very near future.

Eight months from now, in March, 2007, all four-year enlistments that began prior to March, 2003 (when the Iraqi invasion began) will have expired (unless involuntarily extended or re-enlisted). I suspect a very large drop in the number of troops available to send to Iraq is being anticipated and this, more than anything else, is driving internal discussion of a significant drawdown of US troops in Iraq. There simply won't be enough troops to sustain present levels.

Aside from that, Bush is not going to reinstate conscription. But then, he's not going to be president after 2008, either...

Curious. It seems to me that these are the same tactics the neo-cons use! Except that instead of your #5, the neo-cons blame the rest of the world and accuse them of being "against freedom."

The question is simply ludicrous. Your party is the one constantly cutting the military budget to fund your entitlement programs. What you can't earn in real life, you want as an entitlement....you think that just because you wake up in the morning and breathe, you deserve the world... wake up, carry your own weight. The world would be a better place... Who knows, you may even become proud of yourselves....

Even if one of the major parties did cut the military budget (and both parties in fact vote year after year to expand it!) what does that have to do with veterans?

It is principally the Republican Party that cuts benefits to veterans, while "supporting" the active duty troops by sending them into combat with inadequate equipment.

Both parties oppose recognizing a long list of ailments that affect veterans, and thereby deny them health benefits for those conditions. Agent orange and depleted uranium come immediately to mind.

I was obviously referring to the fact that your democrat party and their allies in the media are doing everything they can to hinder our troops.... and the fact that they don't control either house???? Lets keep it up.... ;)
