....my Prius V has only 11,000 miles on it and the engine light suddenly came on.The first thing I checked was the fuel cap....and yes it was not fully tight.I went along tight back on making sure I heard the famous click. To my surprise after that the engine light was still on.Went to Auto Zone to have them check out why the engine light was on, they never hooked it up to a computer and I was told that it would take up to 20 miles miles of driving before the engine light goes off.Now I do not know if that's true or not but I don't really want to spend half of my morning to a Toyota dealership to have them check out why the engine light is on since I fixed the problem myself. So does it really take 20 miles of driving to see the engine light go off.

it might take a few power up's and off's to clear it. give it a week and relax, you're fine.

I'd be surprised if the fuel cap brought the "Check Engine Light" - I guess you've checked oil & coolant? I'd not mess with it too long - just in case something is really wrong.

Not unusual for the ECU to have to relearn and it takes several driving cycles. Still, would be nice to know exactly what the code was that caused the initial problem and to clear the code.

No warning of a loose gas cap, just the CEL if it's detected. And cap (on the 2012 v, at least) does not 'click', it just snugs up tight.

really? i wonder why they eliminated it? it's the best way to tell if it's tight enough.

No idea. By comparison, the Honda cap snugs up then gives you a solid three-clicks to be sure.

i've had cars with multiple clicks as well. seems they reinstalled it on the o/p's car, must have realized the error of their way.

....I guess the Auto Zone guy was right, after less 20 miles and a new start, the engine light turned off.
Thanks you guys for your answers and never give up hope when your engine light turns on.

Having just been through the engine light from loose fuel cap & the dealer resetting the codes, we hope that Toyota will add another light for a loose fuel cap, since the other check engine light problems are potentially a lot more serious. Waiting an unknown number of days for the engine light to go off & hoping that it is just the loose fuel cap seems very risky.

Also on our 2015 v, the fuel cap does one click when tight.

It's probably in your manual. This is from my 2013 PiP manual.

    ■ If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on while driving
    First check the following:
●Is the fuel tank cap loose? If it is, tighten it securely.
The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after several driving trips.
If the malfunction indicator lamp does not go off even after several trips, con- tact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

If the fuel door is open, there's an actual message for that.

I have a 2012 Prius v 5 ATP. The odometer is about to turn 73,000-miles. My v(vee)'s "Check Engine" just came on today.

I checked the gas cap, and it may/could NOT have been "One Clicked - Locked," as the note on the Gas Cap instructs that should be "Tighten To One-Click...Or Else The 'CHECK ENGINE' Light May Come On." I loosened the Gas Cap, and then re-tightened it until I heard the "Locking One-Click." I am now in the "Multiple Power-Up/Trips" cycle to see if the "Check Engine" will go OFF, after a few Power-Ups & Trips.

Back on 8/6/2017(OD 119,870), I was driving my 2012 Prius/v to town and my “Check Engine Light (CEL)” came on solid. I pulled off the hiway and checked the oil. Oil was not showing on the dip stick. Called a Cab to take me to a parts house where I purchased 2 qt. oil, then the Cab took me back to my car. Added the oil and it was still 1 qt. low. Drove to the parts house, purchased another qt. of oil, added it and was still half way between marks on the dip stick. The CEL was still solid, so drove to my Toyota Dealer and left the car (Sunday). Toyota Tech found Code P0401 EGR Flow. “Tech found Warranty Enhancement ZF3.” “Tech replaced RGR Valve. Reflash ECU and modified wire harness as per warranty enhancement.” I picked up my car on 8/8/17. CEL was not lit and drove away after telling Local Toyota that I was concerned about getting 3 qts. Low since their last 5000 mile inspection. I have been watching my oil level since. Over 2600 miles it was down 1.3 qts. The next 2009 miles it was down .5 qts. I contacted Toyota Customer Service asking for help with the oil usage. They asked me to go to the local Toyota Dealer and have them provide an Oil Usage Test ($120). The CEL light was on again, but by the time I got to the dealer, the light went out. I am in the middle of that test now (12-23-2017). In the meantime this week, my CEL indicator came on solid again (OD 126,786). I stopped by a repair shop and they read the Code. It was “P0401 EGR Flow” again. I took the car in the next day Friday 12-22-2017 and Toyota verified the Code P0401. They told me they had to contact Toyota again to get instructions as to how to proceed, but Toyota was closed for Christmas. I really don’t like driving my car around with the CEL on steady. Toyota Dealer said it was ok as long as it did not start flashing. If this happens, they told me to pull over and not drive the car. More to come.

POINT-OF-INFO FWIW FYI: I executed the above described "loosened the Gas Cap, and then re-tightened it until I heard the 'Locking One-Click'." I made probably 8-12 "Power On-To-Power Off" trips of short distance (~8-miles Point "A"-To-Point "B"), but "No Joy" with regards to extinguishing the "CHECK ENGINE" Light.

I had gone to the point of purchasing an "After Market" non-OEM replacement Gas Cap from an auto parts store ($10.01 OTD). The Toyota OEM Gas Cap was $23.65 OTD. I held off using/installing the purchased non-OEM replacement Gas Cap because it lacked the "Attachment Pig-Tail" to tether it to the v(vee). I do not know if the Toyota OEM Gas Cap has a "Pig-Tail."

Anyhoo, I had occasion to take a comparatively longer (~20-miles Point "A"-To-Point "B" distance) trip. It was on this longer trip that the "CHECK ENGINE" Light went off. YEAH!

I share this with you PriusChatter Guys & Gals as a data point of one. Toyota's Owner Manual information on getting a "CHECK ENGINE" Light from an improperly tightened "Clicked" Gas Cap, seems to imply recovery from this "CHECK ENGINE" Light is based upon the number of POWER ON/POWER OFF Cycles, not so much with trip distance in the equation. In my case, I had a minimum of about a dozen or so "Short Trip" POWER ON/POWER OFF Cycles. However, in my, particular, case it seemed like the LONG TRIP did the trick. It is hard to say, but such was my experience. Enjoy...

Happy New Year...Drive Long, Conserve Fuel & Prosper!

Engine light illuminated occasionally for a few weeks on my 2Gen. Toyota dealer identified faulty water temperature control part (thermostat?) which was replaced free due to Toyota's voluntary extended warranty for that part. Was advised that extension expires early next year.
