Got a call about a car already - too good to be true?

Yesterday I bit the bullet and putting a $500 deposit down at a Bay Area dealer, and was told that a Silver Mine Mica #8 with beige seats would be between 6-8 weeks. Second color choice was Seaside Pearl, third was Barcelona Red and fourth was Driftwood Pearl.

But last night I also signed up for my credit union's car buying service. And about 30 minutes ago they called and said a dealer will have a Seaside Pearl within 7-10 days and that I could put my name on it now but they won't be wait around long for me to decide.

So do I take the blue car, even though I'm now totally stuck on the green? Does this sort of quick turn-around for availability seem unusual or am I maybe likely to get a call soon about a green? Anyone know if there are longer or shorter waits for the green cars?

Pheesh. Just when I said I was going to be flexible on color! :p

The dealer was Putnam Toyota in Burlingame, BTW, and they seemed pretty low key and straight up as long as we were prepared to pay MSRP.

    Thanks!

    It really is ur call.
My wife and i were pretty fixated on our color choice when we put in our order for our Prius, and waited almost 5 months for it to come in. We were offered other colors twice before that, but did not want to go in for it.
I think that in the middle of the year there generally is a slowdown with car purchases. So if you think u really want the green, go for it. Its worth the wait.

Agreed. I ordered the dark gray with package #7 and was told 2-3 months. Received a call last week that a black with package #8 came in and the person who put the deposit down could not qualify. Took the black one last week. And the gray one which was supposed to be another 2 1/2 months arrived 2 days after I purchsed the black one.

When we ordered our Silver Pine Mica #3 we were told about 8 weeks. It came in 5 weeks. I would wait 6 mos. for the green. Everybody just loves that color and you don't see yourself coming and going lol. Good Luck what ever you decide.

The blue is a beautiful color. You don't say what package number the blue is. I'd say the options package is more important than the color. But of course, you're the one who's going to be driving it.

If the options package is right for you, and you don't really dislike the blue, I'd say grab it. There's not all that much difference between blue and green.

If you really want a color stick with it for a while. I would suggest shopping at other dealers and get other sales people looking for you (unless you want to deal with a particular dealer). In a different post I described how I got exactly what I wanted within 3 weeks of deciding to purchase. I was offered several colors before I found what I was looking for.

Looks like I waited too long anyway. By the time I called back, after lunch, the blue car was gone. Lesson No. 1 in buying a Prius...

    Too bad.

You need to widen your search. Contact the internet managers of all of the dealerships within X00 miles (however far you're willing to drive back from in your new Prius) and give them the color and package you want. The first one that has one wins your money. Compromise if you'd like. But don't hold your breath for dealer B and don't put all of your eggs in one basket. If you really want the color and package you've decided on, you need to do the legwork yourself.

Priii sell fast. You should have better luck because you have so many colors that you will accept. Dont worry, you WILL get the pkg and color you like with a little effort.

Wait for the car that you want. I put my name on the waiting list for a Dealer A on 3/27/06, then started calling other dealers after that. I first wanted a 2006 Classic Silver Metallic package 8 since I had not seen the Magnetic Gray in person (it didn't come out till the end of April). After seeing a Camry in that same color, I started warming up to the color. I called about 4 to 5 other dealers in Southern California that had good reputations from other PC users and ended up passing on a Classic Silver package 8 from Dealer B who wanted $1500 over MSRP a few days later and passed up on another Classic Silver package 8 from Dealer C selling for MSRP on 4/22/2006. A week later the Magnetic Grays started coming out and I really liked the color, so I decided to wait for one of the last 3 dealers that I was on their wait list. Two sold at MSRP and one sold for $400 under MSRP with a AAA discount. On 6/21/06, I passed on a Magnetic Gray package 8 from Dealer D because they added a few items that I didn't want. The MSRP was about $400 more than other Dealers. After passing on this one, I started sweating because I had heard from Dealer A that the MG package 8 that I wanted was not being made very much. I thought I had made a mistake by passing on it. Then on 7/13/06, Dealer A called and said that the MG Prius in package 8 was at the dealership. I went to look at it and then needed to decide if I wanted to wait for Dealer E who was giving the $400 discount. I was first on the list at Dealer E and their next allocation was supposed to be 7/15/2006. Since the Magnetic Gray package 8 have been hard to come by and Dealer E is a smaller dealer (getting about 7 Prius' a month), I decided to buy the Magnetic Gray package 8 and picked it up on 7/15/2006. So wait for the car that you want unless you are worried about the tax credit and California stickers. Cheers.

At least you can't see the color of the car when you're driving!

I would wait for what I really want if you have the option of doing so...but that's just me.

We're in the Bay Area also and had numerous calls in with just about every Toyota dealer in the area (about 24 of them). I would think that it would be much easier to get the cars now than before the Sept 30th deadline.

We thought going in that we were somewhat flexible about color. The only colors we didn't want were black or red. As various colored cars became available and we had to make the "now or never" decisions, we discovered that color was becoming the highest priority (even over the pkg choice). We finally realized that we were willing to pay for a more expensive package with our first color choice (silver) than a less expensive car in any other color.

We lucked out in that we did get the exact color and package we wanted before Sept 30th, but we learned that color meant much more to us than we had thought it would.

We just bought a seaside pearl from a dealer who had 7 or 8 cars, one green, several seasidepearl (blue) and one silver. I have the impression that you can have whatever you want right now. Just call around. Let it be known that you are looking. You will get it.

We have a 2007, Touring, #3, Seaside Pearl at a discount of 450 under MSRP. I suspect the prices will quickly drop from that, one there are eight to 10 cars on every lot. I suspect that is going to happen within the next few weeks. You won't be waiting long.

If you have a true preference, I'd wait.

I agree, it's something you'll be living with for a while.

I went around and looked at the colors "in the flesh" and came up the the top 3...Seaside Pearl being the top. I didn't go in an order one, I went online and found a dealer with one in stock, but by then I had locked down what color (and options) I wanted.

3 different dealers in Sacramento had Prii in "stock", no waiting, and even discounting a bit. Seems with gas prices dropping and the tax credit reduction, supply has finally started to catch up with demand.

I saw one of every color listed in the brochure, but I believe the only light green car I saw had a deposit on it. The other colors are available. Most common was silver followed by that Toyota gold color.

I went for Magnetic Grey myself, but I also wanted the full leather in dark grey which is a tough find right now. Most cars don't have leather, and those that do have leather seem predominately beige rather than grey.
