Is a 2015 Prius Two with no extra options and 83k miles a good buy at $9.9k? For nearly $3k more I could get the samish car with only 50k miles, but I'm not sure the extra cost is worth it if I'm going to sell it in four years after putting another 120k miles on it either way. Assuming Priuses are as reliable as claimed, either will probably last me that long without major issues, and I can't expect to get $3k more for a 170k car vs. a 203k car surely? Any thoughts?

Prices differ all across the US. Back in August, I paid $9K for a 2010 Prius 2 with 64K miles. And that was a steal as most 2010 Prius are more than $10K with 125K+ miles. I can't comment on reliability as I've only had it for a few months. But I do love saving money on gas. I'm averaging 47 mpg in LA on the surface streets. Good luck!

    Sounds like a great deal:).

Any accident history? Private party sale?

We have a 2010 Prius II with 168 k miles on it and going strong ;). Owned since mile 14 in August 2009. They are great, reliable cars. Just check the dipstick regularly and follow the maintenance schedule and you’ll get a lot of trouble free miles:).

    Good luck (y).

The car is only two years old so that's good for the traction battery. Check the car fax and have a mechanic inspect it. I would check the oil dipstick for oil varnish. That's a good indicator whether the car has been maintained or not.(y)

i would go with the one with the best history. 3k is probably the correct depreciation for mileage. also, those are asking prices. which will make the best deal?

I like the 50k miles car, always buy the newest car with the fewest miles. Especially since you're planning to put 120k miles on it. $13000 is a great price. Just go in thinking you won't get anything when you sell the car, you're just in it for the reliability. And this car should be reliable up to 200k miles.

No matter where you are looking at used cars (stealership, private party, curbstoner) always have a competent mechanic inspect the car and issue a written report before you agree. Also, you should look at the title before you negotiate. If it is salvage or otherwise branded title, run for your life.
