Ah, decision under uncertainty. It will be 10 years before we are certain that this battery will last for that long. I made an educated guess that it was worth the risk. Actually, I made an educated guess that I could install it without killing myself.

It will be worth it to me if the $1600 unit lasts 4 or 5 years. I'll probably upgrade to a newer car before that, so it doesn't make much difference whether it lasts 5 years or 10.

    Hi SpaceCityHybrids. Welcome to PriusChat!
I am looking forward to hearing about your experience with a Toaster kit when you get one.

Also, a major reason for the relatively long life of Prius batteries is not only the batteries themselves, but also the battery management system. The Prius' conservative battery management ensures that although you need a good quality battery cell designed for extra long life, a super magical battery is not necessary for long battery life.

    1,500 miles.
    No issues.

I had taken it out but after some prodding from some members I put it back in for now.

    Two pics from today.
The second pics had a bit of lag on the Max/Min voltages but you get the idea.

I haven't read all the posts but I did have a question on liability.

Let's say there's a bad module and the battery pack catches fire somehow. Who would be responsible? The shop that sells this? Manufacturer? Importer?

No matter who might be at fault, I'm sure everyone up and down the line would get roped into that kind of lawsuit.
That's why you have to carry liability insurance as well as keep things inside a business entity to protect your personal assets.

Hopefully the temperature sensors would shut everything down before it reaches that stage. Assuming they're actually connected...

You read about laptop fires and phone fires originating from batteries. Surely that can come up in car batteries that are faulty

Where does the temperature sensors get attached on these modules?

Yes the temperature sensors would limit power if that happens. You can see it with the original packs. Even a new Prius around here, the fan kicks on when doing mountain passes and after a full day of mountain-ing, the pack is hot enough that your power drops.

Prii have caught on fire before, as have ICE only vehicles, sometimes it just happens. But what you're talking about, laptops and phones, are Lithium-Ion batteries. They are prone to thermal runaway. Meaning there comes a point it gets so hot, that it actually makes it hotter. Like a snowball effect, except with fire and not snow. Fireball effect? NiMH is more protected from thermal runaway than lithium by chemistry design. It can happen though. But if the battery gets up to that temp, there has been a failure in the hybrid ECU not shutting the pack off.

There are little rings that the probes attach to that then clip onto the cells.

Exactly. What tends to happen is you throw a huge wide net trying to catch as many defendants as possible. Hopefully you catch one with deep pockets if that is what you are after. Generally though the manufacturer holds the blame. When your blender goes up in smoke, you don't sue WalMart because they sold it to you, or Visa because they financed it on a credit card. You sue the blender manufacturer. They might then in turn sue their motor distributor if that was the cause of the problem.

Lithium batteries really are a fire hazard. The nickel-metal hydride ones used in this kit are much less of a hazard. Abused, they will explode, but even then it's just a meltdown, not a fire.

There are three temperature sensors attached to the middle bottom of the modules in the center and both ends. See my post #80 - the sensors are attached to the separate blue clips next to the blue stack that hold the 3 tubes vertically.

So when are we going to have a kit for the Gen1 Prii? I've priced out rebuilding with Gen2 or Gen 3 modules, but new modules would be the best. Inquiring minds need to know!

Another option would be a wrecked Gen 4 Trim Two. A couple of people have put those modules in Gen 2.
