2008 Prius fuel injector replacement DIY

    I recently replaced the fuel injectors in my 2008 Prius. I searched online for some good information on doing it myself but didn't find a lot, so I thought I would share my experience.

    We bought the Prius new in 2008. It recently started running a bit rough. I think it had around 200,000 miles on it when I changed the spark plugs and the coils. It helped for a while. At around 270,000 miles I started getting misfire codes. I finally found the time to change the fuel injectors myself (and couldn't afford to have the mechanic fix it). It had around 285,000 miles at this time. The replacement injectors fixed the misfiring issues and the ICE runs much better now. But because the injectors were bad for so long the misfiring caused the catalytic converter to fail.

    My prius is shuddering and running rough intermittent I changed the sparkplugs and 2 coil packs and I mite try the injectors next. Was your prius having intermittent rough or permanent.......

    Hi Nugent, I actually just started having this problem with my 2011-took it to the dealer and they said it needed a new fuel injector. Quoted more than I was willing to pay to replace all the fuel injectors and spark plugs (actually tried to double bill me on the labor). Did you replace your injector? It looks like you have to take off all the windshield wiper/washer components to get at the fuel line disconnect.

    I suggest removing the fuel rail attachment in the instructions, the injectors will not go back in evenly when you lock down the fuel rail. I used the same injectors just took them out and cleaned them. the ohms should be 13.9, re-manufactured injections may read 14.4 and may cause a code light to come on. remove the fuel rail attachment to engine 10mm, which is hared to get to and don't remove the coolant reservoir for the hybrid electric system.

    I bought a set of remanufactured fuel injectors and each one measures more than 14.4 ohm. I'm assuming they are all no good...?

    how do you do remove the fuel rail? I followed the instructions above, but I couldn't assemble the fuel rail correctly, it kept leaking. I tried 4 times. I spent hours... Any help would be helpful.

    I followed your instructions, thanks for posting! I am having trouble with the fuel rail. I am getting leaks from one injector or the other. Is very frustrating. How did you manage to replace the injectors without getting gas leaks?

    Padro... I did not... I think it's possible that I may have messed the o rings because I didn't use lubricant! I basically didn't know I had to. Can I just buy some or do I need to order the entire part again? Any ideas of how to remove the fuel rail guard? It would be so much easier if I could see what I am doing...

    Another question I have is about the torque needed for the two main screws that keep the fuel line in place... Anyone knows?

    Thanks a lot for your reply! Yes, I am going to follow this video's advice. Do you happen to know if you leave the big ring (INJECTOR VIBRATION INSULATOR) on the injector or does it has to be placed in the body of the engine?

    When you are "done", how do you know is set in place?

    I don't understand this question. Did you remove the cylinder head cover, for access to the fuel rail?

    14 ft.-lb for the two bolts that hold the fuel rail to the cylinder head. The smaller bolt off to the side has a spec of 80 in.-lb.

    The insulators are installed in the cylinder head.

    How do you know they are correctly installed? After you've inserted the injectors, rotate each injector body a little to make sure the O-rings are not twisted.

    When you power up the engine, if you don't have fuel spraying everywhere then you did a good job. If you damaged the O-rings then you will need to buy new ones, lubricate them with gasoline, and try again. You can get replacement O-rings at any auto parts store, just bring examples along so that the parts clerk can get you appropriate sized replacements.

    Yes, I tried again. This time I was way more careful. So far it's working! The manual helped a lot at dissuading me from trying to remove the cylinder head cover haha. I did it without as some of the Youtube videos shown. I will report how it goes. I still don't know if I repaired the misfires (P0301) problem or not, but I will report.

    Yes, I was talking about the cylinder head cover. I did not.
    Following the instructions provided here, and with a lot of smooth work, I was able to replace the fuel injectors though!!! I bought a pack on the auto parts store ($6 for one O-ring, ouch) and after inspection and one scavenging from the old injectors (I wish I didn't had to do this), I was able to have a set of functional O-rings. My advice for anyone reading this is to be soft and don't try to use force to insert the injectors. Also, if you can wait, use only new O-rings. Toyota doesn't recommend using the previous ones. Also, try to see what you are doing as much as possible. If the O-ring is not going straight, you will be able to see it happening so you can just stop and try again.
