    As some know I just got a 03 Prius. I'm just getting to know it. I have nav buttons but, it's not installed. is it a program or more than that?

    Hello TLars;

    I have an '01 and it too has the buttons but no actual Nav. I went to the dealer about a year ago and asked him if it was just a sofware upgrade. He said not really worth it since a bunch of sensors need to be installed and a computer upgrade. Also my Screen is about 1/2 gone blank it too will be about an 650.00 dealer only replacement.

    I was going to keep my car get a fresh paint job and replace the screen as it is a great ride.

    Not sure, But I believe I have one of the "Luckies" another contributer mentioned. I have had this two owner car since 2008. The previous owner had all the workorders performed by the DEALER when I bought it. "It" is a silver 2001 Gen 1 prius. The traction battery was replaced under factory warranty at around 48,000 miles by him and I bought it with around 74,000 miles. "It" now has 148,946 miles on her and has been averaging 45MPG for 8542 miles. I replaced brakes, tires, both rear wheel hubs, all fluids twice, and installed the latest most durable Inverter coolant pump. I regularly replace oil and filters as required. Interior is impeccable. Clear coat is the only blemish.

    I need to sell this car and my Ford E350 Diesel Powerstroke van because Insurance costs are so high and retirement looms in my near future. I will replace these two vehicles with a single small van. I am not sure how keen collectors are on aquiring these cars but I know mine is a prime candidate for pre$ervation.

    Thanks for the read.

    Sincerely

    Karoo

    It's more than that. There's a nav computer that goes under the passenger seat, a GPS antenna that goes under the dash, and a microphone that goes ... somewhere, I forget. There's a priuschat member, mlibanio, who has posted exactly what to obtain to set it up, if you really want to, though, given the limited enthusiasm most on PriusChat feel for the usability design of Toyota's nav, you would have to have some specific reason to want the stock nav, to put in that much work to make it happen.

    In mlibanio's posts you can find some interesting information about later years' part numbers for the nav computer that can drop in and work, and actually be better than what would have come in the car in 2003.

    You're relatively lucky to have the '03; the '01 even had the wiring missing, so adding it to an '01 required splicing on the wire harness.

    My 02 has it. Never use it. It's not exactly worthless, but it isn't easy to use (maybe I need practice.) And the latest update was available in 2013. Think about the early days of GPS, the nav is pretty primitive.

    Anyhow, I don't think I'd bother trying to get all the parts together at this late date. I also have one of those sit on top of the dash & plug into the power port GPS's. It's easier, and when I don't need it, it goes on the floor in the back seat.

    I would not get NAV regardless of year. I have had it in a 2010 and 2013. It is very primitive and generally sucks. The 2013 updates can only be done by a dealer (requires TechStream) and costs close to $300. You can update the 2010 yourself with a DVD and will spend around $250. A standalone unit with better functionality as well as free map and traffic updates for life can be gotten for less.

    How? Even undiscounted, the list price for the DVD is $169. Is there any other expense involved?

    At the moment they are not collectible. Maybe in 10 or 20 years.
