Hi All, both a 2001 and 2006 Prii. I just brought my 2001 in for inspection and it fail! The tech said the engine error log posted a 3191 which requires a Engine Control Module (ECM) and a new gas tank. Both are not under warrantee since I have about 90k on the ODO. I'm not quiet sure what to do since a repair of that magnitude will cost upwards of $1600 in parts plus labor of about 4 hours. So we’re talking $2k plus tax. I guess a 5 year old Prius is too old? I'm not sure what to do since I cannot legally drive it after this month is over. :-(

Were there any other codes? Can you take it somewhere to get a second opinion? Bob Wilson
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(galaxee @ Jul 14 2006, 08:41 PM) </div> Thanks for replying so quickly. I'm going to take it into another dealer for a second opinion in a couple of weeks. At least once every year I get the triangle of death. Just last week I got one which was probably still in the computer's memory. I brought it to my local dealer 3 times since i had my 2001 but they could not find any codes. Today however, for the inspection, they did find the 3191 code. i have an appointment on the 27th with another prius tech at another dealer which may give me another explaination. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.
I had one a few weeks ago and it was due to contaminated fuel. I usually check the obvious first ( plenty of fuel pressure and steady reading, correct oil level, spark plugs, air filter, etc. ). Only a few I had required the fuel pump ( which means replace the tank since it is built into it ). Another possibility is the Circuit Opening Relay. It controls the pump. Keep us informed on the progress,
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(osiris12 @ Jul 14 2006, 09:08 PM) </div> BINGO! A transient and they found it in the log. Transients are not good, they tend to come back but that should not keep you from getting through the inspection. My understanding is three ON-OFF cycles will clear the code. But the problem needs to be diagnosed. Can you recreate the "triangle of death"? I have gotten one once doing some hill-rolling tests when I was too quick with trying to start the car. It was exciting until the third start 'cleared the symptom.' Bob Wilson
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(rick57 @ Jul 14 2006, 11:41 PM) </div> i guess the express lube here is worse than i thought... 99% of p3191s are oil overfills, clean throttle body and out the door, no comebacks.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(bwilson4web @ Jul 15 2006, 03:21 AM) </div> It is the ECM confirmed by the Prius tech. The part will cost $1200 plus labor/tax. So I'm looking at about $2k. My heart sunk with shock! I called Toyota about this issue just being out of warrantee (90068k) but I did bring the car in for the exact issue at 30k which was recorded. Toyota Customer Service gave me a case# and will work out a compromise with the dealer to have the cost reduced. So I’m crossing my fingers on not paying full price. Worse case would be to find a wrecked Prius where I can pull the module out (it sits behind the glove compartment). I need part number 89661-47054.
I believe that you are on th eright track, osiris12, and too bad that they may stick you with part of the expense. If you have not read TSB EG011-02 yet, look for it in the files section of the yahoo toyota-prius-sat1 group. The diagnostic 'decision tree' sometimes leads to replacement of the ECM only, and sometimes the fuel pump relay and/or the fuel tank assembly entire. The P3191 engine no-start slow-start code can be related to any of the above, or to clogged fuel injectors, carbon soot on the throttle butterfly, or engine oil in the intake manifold. Quite a few 2001 Prius needed a new ECM, including mine.

He doesn't think the other components are needed. I did read the TSB which I had brought in to him. He was familar with it. Thanks for the info everyone. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
