Drain valve...

Thanks for the opinions. I think I will just deal with a plain old drain plug and have the peace of mind that my oil isn't going to be draining down the freeway. It's really not that big of a deal for me to spend an extra $0.50 for a drain plug gasket and get down there with a ratchet that I'll be using with the oil filter wrench anyway.

 

I've been using a Fumoto valve in my subaru for about 100K. It really makes oil changes quicker and less messy. No leaks from my valve. I'll probably put one on my new 2006 Prius when I get to the first oil change.

I asked one shop that I had one of the major service done at and they were a little hesitant about my drain plug, but still did the service.

Like the fumoto site says, they have sold over 2 million plugs and haven't had any problems, but I still understand the worry.

 

It looks like this subject has been beat up pretty good, so I’ll just say that I don't want something that I need to keep track of extra parts to make it work. Because I will lose them and then need to buy another. I vote for the one piece construction of the Fumoto valve.

CMM1000 by Black and Decker. I have 1/4 acre (with a house, of course, so about half that is lawn) and I can mow it several times per charge if I wanted to. But of course I never need to.

Trust me when I say I won't go back to gas! I tried a nice push reel mower, but it would not cut the grass long (tall) enough, so I had to settle for this.

My .02: I've had the suredrain on two ford explorers for years, and now my two prii for last couple of years. no problem. no leaks, no annealing (or whatever the hell it is) of any gaskets, just install it. no leaks. got them at walmart for $10 but they don't carry them anymore; glad to see the OP with link because I'll be buying another when my 2006 comes in in August. I originally picked it over the Fumoto because it was cheaper, and available at walmart.

You don't need to use the little hose for the suredrain, on the prius. It's easier to screw the release valve on without it anyway. it does drain a little slowly, so it's Miller Time for that. I bought it because when removing the regular drain plug, the oil comes in a gush and I ended up wearing rubber gloves. half the time, I dropped the oil plug into the drain pan. problem solved.

it's so easy with the suredrain that I change my own oil in the winter, even though I live in MN. However, on a couple of occasions with the Explorers, I'd take it in somewhere for an oil change and just hand them the release valve thing.

I can pull my drian plug and only get a drop or two on my fingertips, and none any where else.

The real trouble is when you pull the old filter. That gets oil all over me.

So as long as you still change the filter (like you should every oil change) I don't see the point of the product.

on the filter, cut off the bottom couple inches of a 1L pop bottle and use that to remove filter when it is loose and about to come off.

The Fumoto valve comes with a blue washer. Is both drain plug gasket and blue washer used when installing the Fumoto valve?

We just sold our diesel pusher motorhome. When I bought it I installed a Futomo drain valve on it. When it was time for an oil change I would place a 5 gallon gas jug under valve and drain the oil. Made it really simple and I never had a problem with the valve.

I installed the F-103N on my Prius because I like the nipple. I also installed a Futomo drain valve with nipple on my wife's Dodge Caravan. I leave the drain tube on it and when I'm done draining the oil I just ty-wrap it back above the front cross member.
