I just purchased a 03 Prius at a auction. they said it drove in and when I went to pick it up it wouldn't. all the lights were on, but no ready light. I cleared the codes (P3191 and P3101) the lights with out and it started and drove fine. Once turned off if started right away it would start and then die after a few seconds. I checked the oil, cleaned the throttle body and sucked out oil in the intake. The same codes return after clearing and after the second start try. I just got it so I have no history. Any ideas?

If you have the time, there's a lot of good info here. Another one of the Bay Area's Great hybrid shops!

One of the problems the Art's Automotive mentioned was that the PCM may think it's out of gas. He said that the car he worked on showed 3 bars on the gas gauge yet acted like it was sucking fumes. Sorry for your troubles.

Try clearing the codes by disconnecting the 12v battery in the trunk (Suggested by Patrick Wong.)

Is there a port to check fuel pressure? And would adding fuel might help the pcm see more fuel? It's odd after clearing the codes I can drive it. Only once per clear.

disconnected both batteries and codes did not clear. I had to use a scanner.

That would suggest a ground isolation fault on the HV side. It is odd you don't see a code to that effect. Unless there are codes there your scanner is not seeing. Does your scanner have extension files to allow interrogation of all the Prius' ECUs?

Did the Art's Automotive article (in post #2) shed any light on your situation?
Yes, it may, but you need to add at least 3 gallons in one go, or disconnect the 12 V battery so it forces the ECU to recalibrate the available fuel. Also, possible the fuel has sat so long it has gone off? In which case, a drain before fill might be a good idea.

My scanner does not go that deep. I will try some gas tomorrow. How do you go about checking the ground side.

You need to upgrade your scanner, as with your current scanner, you won't know what it can't see. You might as well not bother scanning the car at all if you are only getting a small percentage of the trouble codes and then clearing the ones you can't see, along with the ones it can see. If you see all the codes, the picture is much clearer than if you don't see all the codes.
Huh? I didn't say check the ground, I said disconnect the 12 V battery. This is so the ECUs power down and can initialise themselves when they power up on reconnection of the 12 V. One of the (many) recalibrations is the quantity of fuel in the tank. Again, you only need to do this if you have put less than 3 gals (in one go) in the tank.

Update: This weekend I pulled out the battery cleaned the links and assembled and retest system. I cleared codes and started vehicle drove for a couple miles and turned off. tried restart after 15 sec. and no ready light and all warning light came on. retrieved codes P3000 and P3001. Both P3191 and P3101 did not return. It looks like I need a ECU for the battery. Would I be correct in assuming this. Or is there a test for checking it?

some quick internet reading returned a number of *possible* causes, but that oil in the intake and/or low fuel level can cause BOTH DTCs and symptoms at the same time.

Apparently if the oil is overfilled in cold weather, it can pool in the intake causing engine performance loss/failure to start/restart. Also, the Gen1 cars seem to have less accurate fuel gauges than the later ones and if the in-tank pump sucks air..... the engine dies.

I think cleaning the throttle body and sucking out the oil in the intake took care of the first codes but, now the other codes lean toward the ECU. Is there a way to test.

No codes indicate an ECM failure, although a failed one can cause many different codes.

Happy report after getting the last code I was able to get a used battery ecu. After replacing it and clearing the code all is good at this time. thank you Tlars

    Sounds good!

Plug and play, or was there any re-initialization that you needed to do to get the ECU to sync up with the rest of the car's systems?

Plug and play. It had the same part number but out of a 02.
