[KB] How to Reset Gas Gauge

After filling, the gas gauge on my 2006 Prius only reads 1 bar and the fuel nozzle clicks off even though I have only put in about 1/2 of what I know it takes to fill the tank. The nozzle force-stops and will not allow me to put in any more fuel. I have followed your steps to the letter multiple-multiple times, got the 5-digit code w/ the "1" in it, but the gauge still reads empty. Any other suggestions?

i did that after changing the combination meter but now the whole fuel gauge bar flashes continuously.At least i filled the gas tank yesterday.This is puzzling!!

And guess what,I found out what we were doing wrong! Just one little step messes up everything. Here is the steps from the TSB and only applies to the 2G.

1. Park the vehicle so as it is level,front to back and side to side.
2. IgOn and make sure that "Trip A " is showing on the odo ( this is where we made a mistake ).
3. Power down.
4. Keep your foot off the brake.
5. Push in and hold down the Odo/Trip button.
6. Push the Power button twice to IgOn ( not Ready mode ).
7. Turn the Odo/Trip off then On 3 times in 5 seconds.
8. Continue holding the Odo/Trip button until a 6 digit code appears.
9. Release,then push again the Odo/Trip button for another 5 seconds. The 6 digit code will change to a 5 digit code.
10. After the middle digit,of the 5 digit code,changes to "1" release the Odo/Trip button and the odometer will return to normal reading.

I would probably say that is correct. I'm assuming that Toyota figured that the reset would only be done by a tech at the dealer & he would be working alone, :lol: .

Mr. Rick,

I have an unusual problem that maybe you can give me some insight on. I have and inaccurate gas gauge on an 09 gen 2. I have don the correct reset codes several times but it is still inaccurate. I am being told that I need gas when I dont. Basically I am going 200 miles and it is blinking 1 pip saying I need gas. I have done some trial and error. The last step I tried was to put a gas can in the back of the car and test the reading. Well I have been driving for 120 miles on 1 pip. So I think the fuel sensors are having an issue. Have you even encountered something like this? Do you have any suggestions? The MPG is still above 40 but filling up when it says it is empty only lets me put 4-5 gallons in it and it goes back to full. Also the only other strange thing is that my 12v car charger under the dash isnt working now. I havent checked the fuses but that might not even be related. Thanks

How do you do this for a 3rd gen?! My '14 Prius C is having the issue with wrong readings, disappearing gas, and inaccurate gauges... and I can't find ANY instructions for how to do this with a 3rd gen. Anyone?

where it stayed for most of the week. At about day
four I called and asked what was happening and they said please come get your car, you'll need to bring it back next week. We had to order another part which should be in by then. Next week comes
and the car stays another few days. I call again and guess what. They need another part, please
come get the car. Third week, brought the car in
and a few days later they call and say it's fixed. They even washed it. Good, right?

Well...my son goes to fill the car the next Saturday and puts the nozzle in the filler tube, clicks the automatic fill thing on the nozzle and turns his back.
About 5 dollars into the fill he smells gas and hears
a splashing sound under the car. The gas is pouring out onto the ground instead of into the tank. This kind of thing really instills confidence in our toyota techs. Anybody else have this experience??? Could it be they just didn't connect two pieces of pipe?

This happen to me the other day in my gen 3 2013 prius

I got the right code responses from the reset procedure, but the gauge still drops to empty with maybe 4 gal left in the tank. I wonder if there's a problem with the inclination sensors themselves. Does any know where they are, or if their output signal is available somewhere?
