That blows chunks!!! I think there are corporate troubleshooter specialists that need to be summoned; the problem is to convince the ##$$%@^ dealer to take you seriously!! Make sure you talk to Corporate, and get names. Don't forget, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! If you need to collect letters of support for your cause, please let me know so I'll send one! Last resort, ATTORNEY!!

I suggest recording your calls to corporate, especially if you get the standard "this call may be monitored or recorded for quality or training purposes" line.

My ICE came on today for the 1st time in a long time. I was running the defrost so I am wondering if that caused it to come on or if it was the periodic come on. Only stayed on for less than a minute. Was 37 degrees outside.

Yeah yeah, that's probably what my Toyota dealer is going to say "when the system determines that the gasoline engine needs to be started." and "the gasoline engine may also operate in circumstances other than those listed above, depending on conditions" Total BS.

This is the phrase that they'll use to get themselves off the hook, "when the system determines that the gasoline engine needs to be started"! This seems to be a BS catch-all phrase to cover situations like yours.
Duh, the engine will do what the hell it wants, whenever it wants!!??
This is no answer; we're dealing with a machine, with computers, not a cat!!
I wonder how many drunken lawyers they got to come up with that phrase!!!

Could you, or them, check the air intakes and outlets for the battery. If even partially blocked, the battery temperature might get to an unhappy place, and thus the ICE starts up.

Good idea, Priuscatprimeguy. I rented a Prime from Suburban before buying so I could see if I would be happy with one. You should be able to duplicate the conditions causing your issue.

if the air intakes were blocked you would think a high temperature would trigger ICE. As you are probably aware from reading this post that ICE kicks in when the 50 F or lower threshold is reached.

If you do this (which I agree is often a good idea when you think it's possible the issue could escalate to the courts) I'd strongly suggest that you ask them if you can record first, to ensure that you don't break the law. The person you're talking to might be located in a two-party consent state where their permission is required in order to record the conversation. Better safe than sorry!

  17. "When the outside temperature is below about 14F"

That makes sense. Because I've never had the engine come on just because of cold temps except when activating windshield defroster. This morning, I used the Remote Climate in Entune to preheat my car, max heat, because it was 24F. Once that was done, all of my commute, this morning, the engine never turned on, and the temps stayed 24F-25F even with some frost by the top of the windshield.

Yup, it's a mystery why or why not ICE kicks in. Just because ICE didn't kick in THIS time with the parameters you have chosen doesn't mean that's the case every time. For example ICE was kicking in for me when the temperature was below 50 F on several occasions then for no other apparent reason, same scenario ICE did NOT kick in on several occasions.

Keep in mind that the temperature being cited is the air temperature. ICE activation is looking at the battery temperature, which is a factor of air temperature during the previous hours while it sat, and what temperature it was at when it started soaking in the cold.

Having charging end as close as possible to your departure time means the battery is warm from the charging process.

edit: To add, time since charging stopped is another factor to consider for this.
