Just transitioned from my Gen II (08') Prius to a 2017 Prius 2, and having spent the last two days trying to absorb all the new engineering changes, I've got a question on the pre-collision alerts. The system is on, but haven't seen any alerts like the first to appear "BRAKE" warning or audio alerts. The active cruise system is working very well, as is the lane departure system. I should think that the radar and camera system should give a warning a fair distance ahead if say approaching a slow moving vehicle at a closing speed of say 20 mph, or a stationary vehicle at your speed of 10-20 mph. All the videos I've seen so far show show an abrupt stop very near the test target, but no inkling of how far ahead the alert should be warning you. Being a retired Engineering Tech, I want to know beforehand just what each system does and how it reacts... Nature of the beast I guess :).
Maybe I'm just "old school" but one thing I noticed while prowling the dealerships is watching people checking out a car with a salesperson (nobody but me looking at the Prius(s)), that virtually non of them asked to see under the hood...

Well yeah, you look under the hood and there's really nothing to see but a bunch of plastic covers.

This is the closest I can find

The interior video cuts in just as the alert comes on at 70km/h (42mph). Hopefully that'll give you a sense of distance.

It really does seem that the emergency braking system is really only for emergencies. In my opinion it does allow the car to get "too close" before it kicks in. But, I am used to it now.
I also transitioned from an '08 to the current version. Great upgrade!

I went from a Gen 2 to a 2016 Three w/ATP. You can change how far away the system will look. Even on the furthest setting, you still have to get pretty close before the big red BRAKE!! will come on the display.

There is a thread here where someone experienced the pre-collision system in action. The experience sounded scary, but OP was glad to have it. I concur.

curious - about how many settings of variability the prius has. Each manufacture most likely has its own criteria & different setting levels. For example - most teslas we've driven have 7 settings. #7 being so rediculously far away it almost seems like a false warning - as opposed to setting #1 - where you would swear you have already collided, for certain.

As far as I know, Toyota hasn’t published detailed, quantitative performance specifications for the pre-collision system. The New Car Features book (available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com) explains how the system works in general terms, but it gives only the same speed ranges that are published in the Owner’s Manual:
    • Pre-collision warning:
      • Vehicle speed is between approximately 7 and 110 mph (10 and 180 km/h). (For detecting a pedestrian, vehicle speed is between approximately 7 and 50 mph [10 and 80 km/h].)
      • The relative speed between your vehicle and the vehicle or pedestrian ahead is approximately 7 mph (10 km/h) or more.
    • Pre-collision brake assist:
      • Vehicle speed is between approximately 19 and 110 mph (30 and 180 km/h). (For detecting a pedestrian, vehicle speed is between approximately 19 and 50 mph [30 and 80 km/h].)
      • The relative speed between your vehicle and the vehicle or pedestrian ahead is approximately 19 mph (30 km/h) or more.
    • Pre-collision braking:
      • Vehicle speed is between approximately 7 and 110 mph (10 and 180 km/h). (For detecting a pedestrian, vehicle speed is between approximately 7 and 50 mph [10 and 80 km/h].)
      • The relative speed between your vehicle and the vehicle or pedestrian ahead is approximately 7 mph (10 km/h) or more.
(This information applies to vehicles sold in regions where pedestrian detection is available.)
As @pilotgrrl kindly notes, the pre-collision warning timing can be changed using the multi-information display. There are three settings, near, middle, and far, but to my knowledge, Toyota has not disclosed how exactly the system’s operation changes for each setting.

For an in-depth, technical look at this topic, not specific to the Prius, I suggest the chapters “Fundamentals of Collision Protection Systems” and “Development Process of Forward Collision Prevention Systems” in Handbook of Driver Assistance Systems: Basic Information, Components and Systems for Active Safety and Comfort, published by Springer in 2016.

There are only 3 in my 2016 Prius. I set mine to the furthest away. The middle setting is the default.

Thanks for the replies everyone! The YouTube video does tell me one thing that I am not getting, is the first warning tone, which in the video seems to occur at around 300' (about 91 meters). This is why I'm asking, as with the system on and set to maximum sensitivity (radar on but cruise off), I'm not getting any initial warning tones. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or is something amiss? When I picked up the Pruis 2 late Thursday, I did discover that most of the safety systems were not turned on, so I corrected that and set all to max sensitivity the next day. Today I did an "initialization", but to be honest I'm not sure what's being "initialized"...

Being a retired Engineering Tech, I just can't help it, but at the risk of supplying too much wordy information, the things that I have noted with regard to the Radar and Lane Departure features on the way to and from the Dealer (about 50 miles each way) in the last couple of days; is that the adaptive cruise control is actually measuring the distance to the car/target and seems the same distance wether a compact car or the back of a semi trailer. The Lane Departure will actually do a little corrective steering to keep you in the lane, but in an a strange way it will actually duplicate the "Swaying" that it's designed to detect on the part of the driver, because the steering will gently direct the Prius back from the shoulder line in a slow course towards the center line, then slowly back again in a kind of slow "S" pattern. It isn't recommended to do this on a busy highway however...

Trying to find out what near, medium, and far distances are for the PCS, I've been watching Japanese TSS videos. No numbers mentioned, but I like their music better than ours. Also no tedious legal disclaimers.

It really only responds to true emergencies. I reckon it would have been 3 or 5 months before I got the first " "BRAKE" warning and audio alert" - maybe a dozen times since. On one (maybe 2) of those occasions it "saw" something I hadn't, and stopped in time - savagely.

If it didn't respond ONLY to perceived emergencies, it would be popping up all the time - annoying the driver, who would turn it off - and it would be useless.

The DRCC (Cruise) can be a bit sudden if it detects a sudden closing gap, but that isn't the Pre-Collision alert.

As for looking under the bonnet (hood), there's not a lot which many home mechanics would recognise, particularly on a hybrid. My last car where I would have been able to recognise almost everything under the bonnet was my 940 VOLVO - next car had this massive piece of plastic covering just about the entire engine.

I’m rather fond of the UK tss commercials featuring anything from owls to a fighter pilot in the passenger seat warning the driver of various hazards. I would be the fighter pilot, the more tech informing me of “threats” around me, the happier I am. Having to drive around any large town freeways, would prompt me to ask Toyota if they offered a top weapons rack pre-loaded with a pair of Hellfire missles...

I don't think actual distances are used for the PCS, only the relative (delta) speed difference between your car and the object in front...

The DRCC settings are based on actual distances...

The youtube videos only show what happened under those circumstances shown.
I don't know the technicalities of it but (stating the obvious, I know) in my experience the "BRAKE" warning comes on when the car thinks you're going to collide if no action is taken. The distance between the object and the time that the warning appears varies with speed, e.g. the faster you're going the earlier the warning (further away) and the system also takes into account the steering angle. E.g I often travel slowly (<20 mph) along a street with multiple parked cars either side, if I am travelling towards one of the parked cars and happen to turn the steering before the warning comes on (to avoid the parked car) the warning doesn't come on, even though I'm still travelling towards the parked car, if I don't turn until the last second the warning appears.

I have seen and heard the warning twice but have not had the brakes come on, first I was closing in on a car that was turning off the road, closing speed about 30mph and distance about 40 metres; and second I made a turn across a busy road with a small gap, closing speed momentarily about 40mph and distance about 50 metres. I am not sure that it would have been good in the second instance if the car had applied the brakes.

The reason I have been asking is that while the active cruise works quite well, I'm still not sure if Collision detection is working as I'm not getting any alerts. I'd expect them when closing distance on a vehicle ahead is above a certain threshold at a reasonable distance. I don't think Cruise needs to be on but not "set", but I'm experimenting just to see. Being a technically curious sort by nature, I'll keep looking. As an example, last nite I watched a lengthy video on a gen 4 transaxle teardown just to see what changes have been made since the gen 2. With proper care I sure don't expect to have to personally see the "innards", but if something started acting strangely with any of the Gen 4's systems, I might be ahead in having a direction to have the service dept. look in.

It can depend on the speed your driving at.

Looks like the first audio alert is around 100' or so. Maybe it is speed dependent, although I have it set to max sensitivity. My nightly reading is the owners manual and any other technical articles I can find. Everything else is working fine as far as I can tell.

Did get my first "alert/BRAKE" yesterday, speed was low (15 or so mph), and was already breaking and got the alert at a bit less than a cars length. At higher speeds the system, may alert sooner, but approaching the back of a car or truck willingly at 25 mph or over sets off my own "alert" that I don't really want to test...
