That is interesting. I'm lucky, not in flood or fire areas; am definitely in EARTHQUAKE zone. I am prepared as best as possible for that, except still need/want a small solar panel "system" with decent battery storage to sustain complete off-grid existence when THE BIG ONE hits!! The cat and I have plenty of food and water, so as long as the house doesn't completely collapse, we're happy campers!!

Well, I'm in Colorado and I've experienced more earthquakes than flat tires.

 

Well I've been in Socal 61 years now, and thanks to Toyo tires, my experience with flat tires and earthquakes is about even!! Although in my case, the flats have cost me far more aggravation and money than have the earthquakes!! So far!

From what I've read, the current goos are safe for the sensor. Surprisingly, the TPMS sensor does range in cost and design. Off the top of my head, I know one for the Sonic runs for $20 on Amazon. The valve stem might be separate though.
Considering the time spent cleaning the wheel inside, replacing the TPMS shouldn't increase the labor cost.

This compounded by the PV system's design.

The Fit and other cars place the fuel tank under the front seat. Any reason to not do so in the Prius?

I note that the VW uses a coolant system besides air. Using air as the the Prime does reduces cost, but adds to the battery pack's bulk.

 

Although it also improves durability (and possibly power output, a weak point of the Prime) to use a cooling/refrigeration system...

 

I'd prefer liquid cooling in any plug in I get for that reason. Not being in the market for a few years, does let me see on the Ioniq Electric's battery durability pans out though.

In a PHEV with a pack of around the Prime's size, I would more inclined to accept air cooling. Hyundai manages to use it while packaging the battery better.

 

After reading so many Toyo tire flats stories on this site, I decided to get some Michelin Energy Savers. I'm taking a long road trip to visit my son in college and don't want to risk a flat tire on this trip.
We'll I ordered the tires and had them installed at Costco today. I was feeling good about them for about two hours when I suddenly heard a strange sound in the back while taking a trip to the coffee shop. Yup...right rear tire was flat ...all of 30 miles on the new Energy Savers.
I pressed the SOS button on my Advanced and gave the details to the Roadside Assistant. A tow truck was able to pick us up and take the car to my Toyota dealer. I explained the situation to the service man and he said they would look at the tire even though they had not done the install. After they checked it out they discovered that they valve wasn't tight enough and had leaked out they air. They repaired it and said I should take it back to Costco for a replacement tire..some sidewall scuffing had occurred. My dealer did not charge me for this and gave me a write up to provide to Costco. Costco had ordered a new tire for me and will replace the damaged one.
So no harm other than lost time and a wierd Twilight Zone feeling...bought the tires to reduce probability of flat tire...and then had a flat tire immediately. I dont think I'll ever put that goop in a tire...roadside assistance worked great. My dealer was awesome. Costco screwed up but will make good on it...Tire still holding pressure...All good in the end.

I took the donut out of my 2004 gen Two and put it int he trunk of my prime. Almost never use the trunk anyway and I have my V for when I need to carry cargo.

Of course, I don't know if it will fit and won't find out until I get a flat.

I've been through earthquakes, fires, and flat tires. Like earthquakes. most flats are minor. But it's good to be prepared for all three ("bug-out" kit, "shelter at home" kit, and spare tire).

 

agree, but might be worth fitting it to be sure.

 

Ten years younger and pre-rotator cuff surgery I would have been more motivated to change a tire twice just to check fit. In the meantime I have the roadside Assistance and AAA (as long as I'm not in a cell phone eclipse area).

Miss Anne, just have your dealer or tire store install your spare, and drive around the parking lot, like I did. You might not change the flat yourself, but your AAA mechanic, as well as you would probably appreciate it being a good fit if faced with that problem.

A couple of possible issues:

1. A 2004 spare is getting on. "Theoretically" you're supposed to replace any tire older than 10 years, the spare included. In practice, it leads a sheltered life, and I have to admit I've never replaced a spare for that reason.

2. The outside diameter of a second gen tire is somewhat smaller, maybe enough to upset the computers, not sure.

The rim should be ok. Still I would verify fit, try it.

 

I've actually had a spare blow out.

Of course, it was a 1986 spare, in 2007, and it blew out after going over 50 miles on it, so...

 

My daughter drove a month or two on her temp spare, on the front of her 4wd pilot. Drove to the states. Twice.

Long and the short of it is if you want a spare tire for a Prius I recommend LKQ online that’s where I bought mine. They have used spare tires that you can buy and have shipped to you for free.
