I haven't rented one in a while but they use to have a bike specific trailer that was awesome. They were designated for around town moving (?) but I used them twice to get a bike half-way across the US. Probably not good for the Prius tho' as it's heavy duty commercial construction is designed to survive rental use.

 

I haven't rented a uhaul trailer in a while either but seems like the first thing they looked up when I did was the max trailer weight for the tow vehicle. I'm considering getting a hitch but don't have the room for a trailer at the house

 

Since I own my trailer I have no idea.

I used a V6 mini-van already modded for hauling but I don't recall if they checked or not. Their trailer by itself is pretty darn heavy.

 

The trailer is about 600kg (~1300 pounds) iirc. And less than 300kg of waste, so still under 2000lb. (Rated at 2500kg/5500lb total weight, so it is bigger than you might think judging by the pic).
Undoubtedly not even close to the max anyone ever towed with it.
Illegal in my country as well, so only did this for the fun of it and within citylimits (30mph max.) What did surprise me is that it did a lot of EV driving by itself, so the Prius obviously didn't care one bit that it was towing something.

 

I'm really interested to hear how your setup is working for you. I have also switched to the prius to save fuel from my truck and trying to figure out how to haul my dirt bike. I am kind of nervous about that much weight on the rear, it looks like your rear suspension is really low and close to bottomed. How do you get the bike up on the stand and have you inspected the rear mounting points since for cracks?

I was thinking of doing something similar but sliding the forks and front/back wheels off the bike, carrying them in the trunk could drop about 50lbs or more.

 

thanks also do you notice a lot of bouncing in the back when going over bumps? I had a hitch hauler on my SUV before and it really wanted to pitch the vehicle back and forth on some small bumps in the staging area, I had to be really careful and frost heaves were also scary. My bike weights more like 240 with an empty tank.
