What was the avg MPG and total miles on your first tank? I'm sure there has been a thread on this in the past, but if you don't mind, please indulge the newbies such as myself. I am halfway through my first tank and I am averaging 45.3 so far. I've picked up so many good tips on how to drive efficiently on this site. Thanks! ** I never realized that driving the speed limit could incite so much road rage......
Remember, the speed limit is not the only law that applies to the highways and tollways. "Slower Cars Keep Right" is also posted. To each his own (and you'll find both here)... but I say to go with the flow of traffic and focus less on your mpg... the car will get decent mpg without you having to tie up the tollway. Going with flow of traffic can help keep your Prius from getting a bad case of Tahoeitis in the rear of the car. Congrats on your new car, happy and safe driving to you...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(withersea @ Jul 10 2006, 09:42 AM) </div> Computer told me that I got 48.5 miles, and I went 400 miles before putting some gas in it.

There are times when you can drive for milage - like the summer when traffic is diminished with lots of us taking time off - or even on summertime Fridays when people are already at the Hamptons. You should not try to optimize your mpg at the expense of maximizing everyone elses blood pressure as they try to get home or get to work. You will find excellent milage at posted speed limits + 5 or 10 mph. Have fun, drive with the flow of traffic - do not be a mobile speed bump. David
my first tank was 38 mpg and 201 miles. (I tank up on gas price dips, and don't drive a lot, so it's often 200 miles between fillups for me. It (was) nice to spend $10 or less!) I had a tank two tanks later that was my lowest ever: 29 mpg. In fact, I only had a 40 mpg or so average over my first 10 tanks or so. However, I bought my car in late 12/04 in Minnesota, and that was a cold time. (I'd owned a Prius prior to that one, so it shouldn't have been my driving habits.) I averaged 46 mpg through all of 2005, and am a hair over 50 so far this year, but was out of town most of the winter with a sick parent, so my Prius wasn't driven. rpm
Funny you should mention that today. I just filled up for the first time in my '02 that I picked up last week. The MFD showed 46.2 mpg for 484 miles. I calculated it at 45.04. After driving an Explorer for the last 13 years it was very pleasant to put 10.746 gallons in for a full week of driving. The first couple days I had the car the mileage was pretty low as I was just trying to figure it out. After I filled up to day and drove the 30 miles to work the MFD said 53.2 mpg. Mike
My first tank was extremely frustrating. First, I had read so much that I expected to be able to jump in and automatically master "dead-banding" and "feathering". Turns out those are skills that need to be carefully developed and few can do it within the first tank. Two years later, I do both sub-consciously. Second, when I got the car, few in my area had ever seen one. Everyone wanted to look at and ride in it. All of the around-the-block trips killed my MPG. Plus, everyones first question is "How fast can it go". I kept explaining that speed is not the point, it was efficiency, but that didn't work; they always wanted an acceleration demonstration. If I remember right, that first tank was around 40 MPG; I thought that I had made a mistake buying the car. But, things calmed down and now I do much better, consistently averaging in the mid-50's.
My fist fill was at 400 miles The MFP showed 45.9 I used 8 gallons which tells me 50 interested in what the next tank will tell !!!!!!
My First Talk is 52.1 MPG 397 Miles for 7.57 Gallons. Display showed 52.0 MPG. Happy with it. My dealer / salesperson told me that for first 5 tanks, fill in as soon as it reaches 25% level (75 % empty) This is because teh tank will not have been inflated properly first few times.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(withersea @ Jul 10 2006, 08:42 AM) </div> I bought mine in Feb. in Chicago, so the cold also affected it. My first tank was 40.2 mpg, then 41 something, then 42.4 on the 3rd tank. Then it warmed up, and my car (and my driving habits) continued to get broken in, now I'm averaging in the low 50's. It will be interesting to see what happens next winter. I'm pretty good with the glide, I haven't focused on the dead-band acceleration so much. I have rolling hills on much of my short commute, so it's hard to precisely accelerate while keeping one eye on SUVs behind me and another on deer that could pop out onto the narrow road (this morning there was a limping deer that slowed cars in front of me, then after it crossed and they went by, out popped its fawn to cross over). I can feel the glide though, easy on the downhills. It's posted 30mph, and plenty of cops, so everybody keeps it under 40, which is great for me. I drive about 16 miles/day, put in 8 gallons about every 3 weeks. Can't complain about that!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(chuckieland @ Jul 10 2006, 10:56 AM) </div> Which is 5.2 l/100km for the Europeans, or 45.1 mpg for the Americans (I trust the British can use the European system, or should I look up the size of Imperial gallons also?) For the record, 47 mpg = 5 l/100km, 58.8 mpg = 4 l/100km
Got 504 miles off the first tank...filled up and would only take 9.1 Gal...I'm thinking my tank filling skills need work...We'll see what tank 2 brings...
I lost my gas receipt on which I had written the odometer info, but as well as I can remember, the MFD was showing about 48 mpg and my calculated mpg came to around 47 -- I had gone over 400 miles. My second tank was actually worse, because I was doing a lot more very short trips. Now it's getting upt there again and better.
