Who disables the beeping

Mine has been disabled for a while and I have no intentions of changing it. It should have been made to beep outside the car not inside.

I chose the leave everything alone although I did disable the back up beep. I replaced it with another beeper in the taillight so it could be heard outside as well as inside. The rest I left alone.

 

I waited almost a year before I disabled the reverse beep. I'm planning to add a reverse sensor system, which will beep, but the rate is based on how close the object is.

 

I disabled the back-up beep and will soon do the seatbeal beep. I found that too many different things causing the beep caused me to ignore the beep. I want the car to beep if I leave the key in the slot, or do something stupid (like turning on the lights after I got out of the car!) but everything else was an annoyance. I, too, wish it beeped outside when you back up.

 

Turning off the reverse beep would be good, but the car doesn't go ape**** on you if you open the door while in reverse.

 

I turned off the backup beep because I consistently have to wait in reverse for up to a minute for a safe space to back up onto my street. The beeping that long drove me crazy.

Regarding the seatbelt beep, I never hear it when I'm the only one in my car (because I wear my seatbelt). The only time I hear it is when my daughter forgets to put hers on, or when she takes it off too early as we're approaching the house. I like the beep in those cases--it helps train her better.

 

I never had a backup beep in any other car I have ever owned and I see no need for one now. As to installing an exterior beep...nope, I plan to not be forced to move out of my neighborhood by angry neighbors who get pissed off if I leave my garage late at night or early in the morning, thank you very much. People in carparks who are oblivious are oblivious...I doubt a beeper is gonna change that. And lots of cars, even ones NOT running on electricity, are really quiet, and don't have beeps. If you haven't hit any other MFD control buttons, the backup camera is on the screen--a pretty good clue you are in reverse, if you haven't done the mod to be able to switch it on whenever. Additionally, I think it is very important to retrain myself to just make sure I hit the park button and the parking brake whenever I stop for any length of time. As to when I am leaving the car...well, virtually no automatic cars will let you take the key out of the ignition without the tranny being in park--so why not just pretend you're driving any old automatic and put the car in Park before turning it off? It is, after all, just at the top of the "gear" shifter--pretty normal for automatics...I do not know--lots of stuff with the Prius is about retraining yourself. So I'm retraining myself to push park and step on the parking brake (which I HAVE found is necessary, unlike in many other automatics--I leaned against the rear bumper a coupla times w/out the p. brake set and the car moved quite a lot more than I was happy with...)

I don't care about the seatbelt beeps--I always wear mine, and if it tells me my passengers need to buckle up, kewl. Actually, I haven't noticed beeps for my seatbelt--I just realized I moved the car last night a few spaces down the street w/out my belt on and it kept quiet, but when I've had a passenger who hasn't, um, belted up, it gets quite hysterical...

We haven't and won't, but are hoping there is a way to change the pitch/frequency of the backup beeper as it causes really loud, awful feedback from my hearing aids, enough to be heard by anyone in the car and to give me a pretty instant (but short-lived) headache when backing out of a longish driveway. Options at this point are all a PIA. Suggestions anyone?

Hmmm, I should search some of the other forums for modifications----we aren't interested in a beep outside the car, for the reasons Rufaro mentioned, so the add-on mods I've seen won't do.
A drumroll sure would be nice. :lol:

 

My warning beeps are off.

I know when my belt is on or not, and I don't need my seatbelt when swapping cars in the driveway: Get in car 1, buckle up, move car, unbuckle, get out. Get in car 2, buckle up, move car, unbuckle, get out. Get in car 1, buckle up, move car, unbuckle, get out. Get in car 2, buckle up, move car, unbuckle, get out. I certainly don't need my belts or to hear the incessant beeping for that.

Same thing for the reverse. The display clearly shows what gear you're in. If you don't know what gear you're in, you have no business driving.

Should we also have a beep that tells us we are in drive? that is a very dangerous gear to be in. I would bet that 99% of all accidents happen when the car is in drive rather than in reverse or park or neutral....

That sounds like an excellent reason to turn off the reverse beep. It's easy to do and can be turned back on if you change your mind. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Funny, I said something similar to that in a thread about people being concerned about how easy it is to not know what gear you are in and got royally flamed...To each his or her own, huh? As to the parking brake, well, I had gotten out of that habit with my other automatics, but found that leaning against the Pri w/out the brake set put it into a bit more motion than I was happy with. I have less than 1200 miles on the car. No, I really do NOT understand how anyone can, on any kind of a regular basis, not know what gear their car is in. I just don't. If that renders me flammable, so be it. I believe I have a responsibility to use my tools appropriately and safely, and my car is a very valuable tool. Yes, everyone can be occasionally distracted--but should the Prius drive system be redesigned for the distracted?

I agree 100 % - the driver is or should be aware what direction he/she is going. People outside, haven't a clue especially without a sound of an engine.

I found the beeping tends to make people in the car grumpy. AGGGGGggg.. Stupid beeping, I know I'm gonna put on my seat belt, just SHUT UP with the beeping... Which gets the trip off to a bad start... unnecessarily...

So, they are off...

I'm one of the people who drives the roads and parking lots of America who actually knows which gear I am in, and if I am wearing my seat belt, and if my passengers are wearing their seat belts. I don't need beeps or a blinking light on the dash to fill me in.

More people than you'd expect (many on here)... Are not aware of the current gear (in spite of the whole D, R, N, P thing on the dash), and they are apparently not able to discern whether or not they have their seat belt on or off.. thus, they need to be beeped to death as a reminder.

It's good to beep the 'unaware' crowd into submission because these same people are unaware of their surroundings and are likely to hit someone or something with their car. We need them to survive the impact so we can drag them out of their car and pummel them for being so stupid and unaware when they drove into us.

And, maybe... just maybe... the beeping will be annoying enough that the unaware person will need to end their cell phone call in order to buckle their seat belt. Maybe when they are on the phone, they won't even hear the beeping. We know they don't really know which lane they are in, or that they are going 35mph under the flow of traffic.

Setting the parking brake IS a good idea. If nothing else, it keeps some pressure off the parking pawl (the thing that keeps the car from moving when you are in Park).
Pushing the Park button before the Power button is a waste of (a tiny bit of) time. The car will put itself in Park when you push the Power button. If you have SKS, your exit procedure is nothing more than:

1. (with your right foot still on the brake pedal) Push Power button
2. Push parking brake
3. Undo seatbelt
4. Exit

I suppose if you are really into shaving micro seconds, you could do 1 through 3 at the same time by reaching across with your left hand to undo the seatbelt.
Without SKS, add step 3.5 - Pop fob out of slot.

A gentle tap or three on the horn should serve as adequate warning to those who 1) might not hear a Prius, and/or 2) might not see a Prius if it is exiting a spot between 2 monster SUVS that dwarf it :angry: . Even if it had external backup beepers, I'd still tap the horn to warn other drivers I was backing out.
