Hey guys, I bought my Prius on Thursday, and so far I really love it... However, I opened the back hatch today and noticed that the panel that you lift on the back hatch that has the button to open it is a little loose.... how would I go about tightening that up? I searched but came up with nothing. Thanks in advance -Caleb
If you can, post a picture of the affected area so we can be more helpful. I think I know what you are talking about, but a picture in this forum is truly worth 1,000 words.
Ahhhh, I wasn't even close to what you were referring to. But now I get it. This area can be accessed from the inside. You have to remove the back panels and they you will have access to the button from the backside. You be able to tighten, replace or adjust once you have done this.
Had the same issue with my old 2006 Scion XB. The lift panel was known to break easily so I "retro fitted" it with stronger nuts and bolts.
yep that's what I think I'll end up having to do... I feel like I'm going to rip it off every time I open the hatch... Thanks for the input!
The tailgate wasn't designed to use that for lifting. It's held on by both irreplaceable plastic clips and a few bolts. Train yourself and other family members to only use the latch to get the opening started and then lift the hatch from the bottom. Replacing that panel can run over $400. It's called a "garnish" and if you search here you'll find multiple people (like me) that have had to replace it. It doesn't appear too many people have been successful in the long term with repairing the broken piece.
Or just lift it all the way pushing up on the latch release in one fluid motion. It is actually designed to work this way. If the hatch is heavy to lift, check whether the gas lifts need re-gassing or replacing.
