Prius 2017 v C-HR v Prius Prime

If you have your own dedicated driveway, I'd personally suggest the Prius Prime.

You can install an external charger in your driveway and charge the vehicle up every night. You can then take genuine advantage of using electricity to power your Prius Prime for most local journeys - up to around 30 miles per charge.

The fuel savings will speak for themselves and may I be so bold as to suggest you won't miss the reduced space in the Prime, and your family will ride in considerable silent comfort.

Methinks you won't get the same level of economy from the C-HR - as it's not a plug-in and you'll be hauling all that extra weight around. And it's not as aerodynamic either.

Can you live with only 4 seats instead of 5? Take the Prime. But if your mind is set on a cross-over type vehicle, then obviously, the C-HR hybrid it is.

The standard 2017 Prius is a lovely car, however, most of them in the U.K. are sporting minicab stickers.

With the Prius Prime, which has a more agreeable nose and tail, you're less likely to be hailed or approached for a ride - believe me, I have been! (Not that there's anything wrong with working as a minicab driver).

If you love electricity and the idea of driving around town on electrical power only, go for the Prius Prime.

The the C-HR is not available as a plug-in, so your electric use would be same as the Prius.
The C-HR is generally the best looking and most trendy model, but not as mpg efficient as the Prius, the Prime is the most efficient, but less room in the back and the boot and the Prius is the most efficient and roomy.
I personally don't like crossover vehicles, they tend to bounce around too much with their high stance and short wheelbases, but having said that I haven't driven the C-HR yet so I don't know if it follows this trend.

 

I don't know if it is important to you or not but the CHR is made in Turkey. Prius models in Japan.

 

Does that make it a "delight" to drive ?

 

Drive them all back to back. Apparently, reviews suggest the C-HR is harsher to drive in terms of engine kicking in earlier than the Prius. Then some say they find the Prime is more ponderous to drive given it's extra weight.

 

Have you also considered the new 2018 Hybrid Camry? It looks quite compelling to me.

 

I wish in the states we could take these cars out for long test drives like that. A few dealers around here might let you take it on a 10 mile test drive but most want you to take it around the block and decide.

 

It's not everywhere in UK that gives you a long test. Down here you're lucky to get 4 hours.

 

That's little more than a look-around. Are they not keen to sell? Are they storemen, (ie keeping cars in store), or salesmen (ie encouraging potential customers to purchase)????
Sorry for gender specific grouping but for me, it's more eloquent that way!

 

My (Gen 1 Prius owner) salesman spent about 45 minutes in the car going over the features before our actual test drive. We even paired my phone & did voice dialing.

 

Likewise, my salesman have me a good 30 minutes demonstrating and showing the wife and me the features etc before taking us out (as passengers) for 15+minutes. Then we had three hours to take it out and try for ourselves before committing. He's moved out of area now, but I'm still confident for 2019 when I'm due to change. Looking at the Prius Plug-in 2017 (not Prime over here) as well, but there will be too many changes between now and then to predict.

 

You think $4/gallon is expensive? We're paying ~£1.15/litre which is roughly £5/gallon, (currency exchange rates vary). Maybe our dealer profit margin is higher and they can absorb the small extra cost into encouraging the sale, but I put another gallon in the tank on my test drive as a gesture of appreciation.

Edit: filled up this afternoon 13th September at Morrison's (supermarket) pumps - £1.16/litre
That's up another penny per liter ( A'merkan)!

 

We had dealt mainly by email and were there for a test drive and possible purchase.
The salesman demonstrated and covered almost all the menu settings. It was very helpful.
