I think catalytic converter is a dealer only item in CA. Need to install two new gaskets too. Parts will cost around $1.5K total. If the engine is burning lots of oil, then the newly installed catalytic converter probably will go bad again.

Are you sure it's the CAT? I switched out the O2 sensors I ordered from A-zon (you know the website) and couldn't get rid of the codes. They were "OEM replacement parts" which I thought meant that they were Toyota OEM. (But they really weren't) I thought for sure it was the CAT that was bad. I was burning oil bad and thought the CAT was clogged. As a last ditch effort I decided to buy the O2 sensors from a Toyota dealership to make sure I used OEM Toyota parts, sure enough as soon as I used the Toyota O2 sensors codes never came back. Used CerTech Gels: Blowby with Engine Ceramics certech gel to stop my oil consumption. I didn't think it would work but it did. I also use createch (liqui moly) every oil change. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001CZODH8/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1503625720&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=liqui-moly&dpPl=1&dpID=51WqU6%2B199L&ref=plSrch

Hope you get your Prius working and back on the road.

Would be great if you started a thread talking about your use and success with Certech, pretty sure many here would be interested in knowing more.

What lights were coming on when you changed this? My check engine light outs on getting a code for cat. After driving local for 45 minutes or so my warning light comes on with vsc light as well as an light. A/c stops working. Let it sit for 15 minutes vsc and ab lights go off and warning light and check engine ask stay on. Could this be my inverter failing?

    Your inverter pump has failed.

    An easy fix(y).

Hi did you get any good leads? In the same predicament with my '04.... Dealer quoted me $2,500 just for the part. I'm seriously considering parting out the car if repair is seriously going to cost this much!

Go to a private muffler shop and ask to get a catalytic converter welded on, it'll cost less than $300.

This is almost right, sell your Prius out of CA (or NY) and this is legal in the other 48 states. Sadly, you will not pass inspection in CA with a noncompliant Cat, and for a Prius, only a Toyota Cat is compliant.

Thanks for the link! I've been looking for the part number

It's also illegal to use a salvaged part right? Even if OEM?

Does that include a random aftermarket cat or you take it to them?

After market cat is going for about $65 on Amazon. You'll just need to figure how to get it to California

There are no CARB compliant cat replacements for the 2nd gen Prius.

If l can get an after market one here but indirectly will it still show that it’s California legal when it gets smog checked? I’m curious if I do order it and they snoop around will they just try to fail my smog because somehow they saw it was bought after market out of state?

The short answer is they are “supposed” to check for identification on the cat.

    But some shops don’t bother;).

The shop I go to in San Ramon didn’t check the last time and all that was checked was the gas cap and a quick perusal if te engine bay while the obd device was hooked up:).

But you could check with @Joele3 and see what he knows(y).

Majority of the shops don't check under your car
