Hey all question about Prius warranty. I'm looking at a prius in California with 120k current miles. Does the 150k miles/10 yesterday warranty still apply to third gen? Read somewhere saying it was reduced to 5 years and x miles. May someone please clarify ?
Yes as long as it purchased originally in California or other CARB state. The are other exclusions like no salvage titles, commercial vehicle, etc. You should be able to find the 2010 warranty on line at the toyota owners website.
So a 2012 California vehicle will have the warranty of up to 150k/10 years ? What about the 5 year warranty I've also read about, is that different ?
No, only those vehicles that meet CARB requirements (typically only ultra low emission vehicles like hybrids and electric vehicles). A "regular" car doesn't meet those standards and comes with a shorter, standard warranty. That's usually 5 years on most makes but some like Hyundai offer 10 years/100k on all their cars and lifetime on the hybrid battery. On the Prius, the 5yr 60k mile is the powertrain warranty on the non-hybrid parts. For example on a 2010 Prius purchased in cali and still in cali: Water pump for gas engines goes out=no longer covered by powertrain warranty. Water pump for inverter goes out=still covered by hybrid warranty. You can't bring in a vehicle into a CARB state and get the longer warranty nor can you take it to a non-CARB state and expect to have the longer warranty honored there.
I think i'm getting it mixed with 5 year/100k for the hybrid, i'm assuming the components? Which excludes the battery, i just called the dealership to confirm this
2009 warranty manual https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-09PriusWI/pdf/2009_Prius_OWI_lr.pdf page 6 of the manual, page 8 of the PDF, starts a clear chart
drive train is 5/60, see dogs post #4. hybrid warranty is 10/150, includes battery and other misc. hybrid components, but not ecvt.
Here is a link for the 2010 3rd generation- what model year are you looking at? Maybe my bad eyes cannot find it, but I don't see anything for 5/100k.
Fotomoto has it all, except it is very complicated rules Toyota has opted for. If there is any question, it would be nice to call Toyota an ask for a warranty ruling on a certain VIN. I think the dealers can do it to, but I trust them less.
Toyota's battery warranty is really non existent, unless it's smoldering or goes out completely. Most often you would buy your own replacement battery since the warranty doesn't specify how bad or weak the condition must before it would be replaced. I was driving the equivalent of a golf cart (power wise) and Toyota said it wasn't bad enough yet. Good luck.
not exactly. if it throws a code, it is covered under warranty. if not, the battery isn't bad enough. most prius hum along quite nicely, even with a weak battery. in all likelihood, if power and performance are greatly diminished, the problem lies in a part or system that doesn't trigger a troublecode
Grant - The NiMH batteries (Gen2/3 Prius) usually die suddenly and Toyota has been very good about replacing free of charge if under warranty, and Toyota was also quite good about being nice to folks who were close but just off warranty. Your comments seem to refer to the Lithium batteries in PiP and Prime Plug-iNs which have a more gradual loss of EV miles. A few PiP owners have complained about loss of EV miles...to my knowledge we have no reports here of warranty replacecment/failure of Prius Plug-in battery to date
