Does the 2010 really have issues??

there is no consensus, because no one has done a controlled study of a gen 3 engine from zero to a hundred thousand miles. there's just a lot of guesswork, and conflicting opinions.
btw, gen 3 does get synthetic.

Welcome to PriusChat! I bought my 2009 Gen II used at the beginning of 2014 with 83,000 miles on the odometer. The odometer has just rolled over 124,000 and (so far) I've not noticed any oil-burning.

The car has been and is regularly serviced at the dealer. Oil & filter changed every 5,000 miles, cabin air-filter and engine air-filter I do myself. New plugs at 100,000; various bits & pieces changed & checked (PCV when they did the plugs (for just the cost of the part ($11.88) since they were doing work in that area (plugs)); rear brakes cleaned and checked; throttle body service; transmission oil-change; ICE coolant change; inverter coolant change; 12V AuxBattery replacement (well, it was 6+ years old); combination meter changed (warranty repair) at no charge, and they loaned me a brand new Camry for the 3 weeks it took them to get the replacement part!

The only major investment I've made apart from tyres has been a Hybrid Systems Prolong Grid Charging/Discharging system (see threads passim - use search) as a means of preventative maintenance for the TractionBattery (again, search is your friend!)

Overall fuel consumption since I bought the car is around 45 or so, and the best on a single journey I've seen is 61mpg.

One reason (apart from $$$) I went with the 2009 is that it was at the end of a model-year (i.e. (hopefully) most of the problems had been ironed out).

I love my Gen II Prius, and would recommend anyone to get another just like it!

that's another 2010 issue toyota won't cop to.

 

2010 Prius with August 2009 build date. 131,000 miles and no oil burning to date. (Knock on wood!!)

No problems other than some annoying rattles.

I think this is probably more typical of the 2010 Prius.

 

I have some dash rattles and when a strong cross breeze is blowing, I get some rattling as well. The windows are a bit rattly too. I have some rubber conditioner I'll be trying out to see if it will quell this.

 

dash rattles, you'll need to remove the dash and put some foams for those issues. I've done one on a camry before with dash rattles. The foam padding over time get smashed and becomes flat, so you just need to add more to it. The Camry had a TSB for it. Not sure about the Prius lol.

 

Let me know how the rubber conditioner works!

I've never tore up a Prius dash before, only on a Camry and that was years ago lol. So no... sorry RAY! If only I had my own shop

The issue with the oil consumption is how the egr and intake manifold eventually get clogged. This is solved by the installation of what has been called an "oil catch system". Somewhere in this site is a complete break down on how this system works as well as how to install one. One can purchase the parts and do it themselves for under $40 in parts, or have it done ($200 and lower). The system catches the excessive oil that would normally clog the system and keeps it fresh.

It may be hard to find a 2010 with low miles. Many Prius owners just drive like there is no tomorrow. I would advise finding a 2012-15 as you may be able to find the mileage and price range easier. Having owned many cars over the decades, if you want simple comfort, affordability, low maintenance costs and excellent gas mileage, I vote the Prius.

Please read the "newbie" section so you can familiarize yourself with the Prius. Your car will make wierd sounds...........even hours after shutting it off. You need to know about these sounds so you and your daughter don't freak out. Wishing you and your daughter the best!!

 

I've seen the Gen2's taken apart and it looks like A LOT of effort. Last one I saw was what @3prongpaul did a couple of weeks ago in pic form. Such effort to fix the dash rattles I can spend on other tasks.

I am going on the theory of friction. I only have 26,000 miles on mine and have changed mine every 5,000. I will be switching to 5-30w at 30,000 for the simple reason that as the engine gets older, it needs a little more protection. I'm no scientist or molecular biologist, but using 0-20w for an engine with over 75,000 is too thin a viscosity. This, in it self, should cause oil burning due to engine wear. Just my humble opinion.

 

@danlatu blames EGR and PCV system, dumping carbon and oil respectively, into the intake manifold, saying that is messing up the piston rings.

I'm thinking about oil catch can and 5W30. I'm doing oil changes with Toyota bulk oil 0W20, for both our Prius and our son's Civic Hybrid. The latter car is starting to consume more between changes so maybe time, see how it affects mpg too.

mines at 140k miles and it hasn't burn any oil. I understand over time, the piston ring's get worn out and oil start passing through it and it gets burned in the combustion chamber. Maybe the 2010 and 2011 has those issues with engine parts... That's just my opinion.
