    I have a reader and and app on my phone, so I could check rpm on my PiP. I'll try to remember to try that next time I have to run the ICE. But, to find out about the Prime, someone would have to donate one of those. ;)

    Just to clarify, I use cruise control to accelerate and N to coast because it minimizes human variability. It makes it easy to replicate results.

    To me, that's a lot of work to pulse and glide, especially over a long distance attempt.

    Two Prius drivers that I consider experts and greatly respect. I love it when we can disagree agreeably. :) I've tried both, see Bob's reasoning and agree with it, but don't feel like it's worth it to me. I'm glad we're not all the same.

    I will say this, there are few things people can do that will draw my ire more than this pulse glide thing. When I drive on a road, I maintain a fairly constant speed, people who pulse and glide vary about 10mph over short distances, it drives me batty. And yes I get the concept and why people do it but still it is infuriating when trying to get somewhere and someone is doing road tango. It isn't predictable, I can't follow there pattern without potentially running into their backside and it is self serving at the expense of others.

    Now I am sure a good number of you probably do it in situations where you wouldn't be driving me insane doing it, such as on multi-lane roadways where I can easily go around you, but I had a guy doing this once on a 2 lane bi-directional busy road and I wanted to get out and club him as he did this for like 20 miles and there was no way to get around him as the other direction was busy and there were no cars in front of him for a good 2 miles. He varied between 5 under and 10 over the speed limit.

    I 100% agree and appeal to the rest of the prius community to never pulse/glide when there is anyone within many car lengths...
    On an open road when nobody is around...Have at it...

    OK, I'll bite since I was in the discussion above. If you new folks had gone to the trouble to go back and read the original hypermiling attempt posts (2010 to current) from those of us discussing it, you see we are saying the same thing. Don't pulse and glide in traffic. Don't condemn us for something we have not done or condone doing.

    It's a shame you have to actually say that. You'd think it would be assumed that rude driving is ... well, rude. But we've had to say it again and again. Don't drive like a Q-Tip. (If you don't know what a Q-Tip is, come to FL and check out the cars being slowly and erratically driven by small, white fuzzy creatures peering over the dash and under the top of their steering wheel.)

    I didn't like saying it either. My sister-in-law lives in Ft Lauderdale, so yes, I know the Q-Tip factor well. Be afraid, be very afraid.

    I was under the impression that my 2012 Prius 3 had a programmable mode (OBDII code of some kind) to disable regen when letting off the gas pedal; is this not the case? I thought there was another to disable light acceleration when letting off the brake pedal.

    Would this not also work for the Prime?

    The Gen 4 is much smarter so any pulse and glide benefit is greatly reduced. It already does some of that.

    The only thing I ever heard of that would disable regen is either judicious use of the right foot or putting it in neutral. I can't think of a reason you'd want to have it turned off all the time. Easier to trade it in on a non-hybrid and go back to buying lots of gas.

    Agree.
    You should not pulse and glide in traffic. But it's possible to use glide to maintain speed depending on the slope of the road. And you could argue it uses less gas that way...

    I throughly agree:
    My testing and one SAE paper suggested the 10-15% gain is not worth the extra work. Fortunately TSS-P solves the problem my using dynamic cruise control.

    Better still, follow large trucks or pickups with trailers. They provide camouflage for following traffic and a fairly steady speed. Set cruise control and enjoy the ride. FYI, my Prius Prime sees no advantage in that driving style in EV mode.
