Honda Clarity EV electric car to have only 80 miles of range: report Ouch, not only is the range terrible for 2017 EV standards, but the price is also really high. Even a lowly Nissan Leaf can get farther, and the Gen 2 should be announced any day now. And the Chevy Bolt offers nearly 3x the range for just a few thousand more. While I like that the Clarity also has a fuel cell version, and a plug-in hybrid version coming out, I wonder how many sales or leases the EV version will get since it's already horribly outdated and outclassed by its competitors.
sounds like they really haven't bought into bev's yet, but may help them in cali? or maybe popular in japan. they can't be serious.
I was really hoping that they are actually talking about the PHEV range, but it doesn't appear to be so Honda likely didn't want it to outshine the FCEV.
The Clarity is a decently sized car and it's the only midsize EV (not counting the Tesla). But there's a limit to the price point vs. range balance that you can achieve for American tastes. Just like Americans won't buy a 1.6 litre diesel BMW 3 series (even if Europeans will), American's won't buy an 80 mile EV (even if it's large enough).
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric with 124 miles of range is an EPA mid-size car with 96 cubic feet of passenger space and 23 cubic feet of hatch storage. The hybrid version gets an extra 3 cubic feet of storage space making it an EPA "large" car. The Ioniq Electric is being distributed to dealers only in California in April but it can be special ordered anywhere in the US.
The 'real' mid-size sedans have 100+ of cubic feet in passenger space. It means the car is roomy for everybody in it. Honda needed to use more than 1100 Fit EVs if they truly believe Americans want a bigger car over range. Did they think the Accord PHEV did great?
Clarity EV lamo compliance car. Pretty much no one wants a car with 89 miles range and that figure now posted honda site. This car is for Honda to get their EV credits, avoid penalties.
It's going to be a 2018 model so sometime next year..... Oh the better news is Honda expects the PHEV Clarity to achieve a range of 47 EV miles (EPA estimate) which, I'd think, will kill the Clarity BEV sales.
I bet there's going to be some killer lease deals on those to meet compliance once news of the PHEV's range gets out.
