Transaxle fill and drain bolt, what wrenches do I need?

    Ok, so tomorrow I'm off to the dealer to get 4 quarts of ws fluid to change my transaxle fluid. Are both the drain and fill bolt 10mm Allen on the 2016 4th gen prius or something else, I wanna make sure I have what I need before I start this. Thanks in advance.

    Yes to both

    You'll want two new crush washers for the bolts. These are an OEM part.

    Open the fill plug before you open the drain plug. If the Fill plug was jammed, you do not want to have already drained the ATF before discovering this. (i have no idea how many times this has actually happened, but even once sounds bad)

    According to Toyota’s Repair Manual (available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com and via the ChiltonLibrary service, to which many public libraries offer free access), both the filler plug and the drain plug on the P610 transaxle are installed and removed with a “10 mm hexagon socket wrench.”

    The torque specification for both plugs is 50 N·m {510 kgf·cm, 37 ft·lbf}, and as @mjoo kindly points out, you should use new gaskets, part number 90430-A0003 or 90430-18008.

    Thanks everyone for the info. I did know about pulling the fill plug first as I actually had that happen on the rear differential of a pickup truck once. Again thanks for the help everyone.

    Also, the means to safely raise and level the car. This is assuming the drill is the same as third gen:

    With the car level, add fluid until it starts coming back out.

    Lots of ways to get it level, whatever works for you.

    All done, just as easy as an oil change. The fluid with 20k miles on it looked almost the same as the new, wasn't nearly as dark as some of the pictures of low miles changes I have seen on here. I probably won't do it again till 100k miles. Leveling was pretty easy as my drive is inclined so I just backed it up the incline and drove it up on ramps, checked the level with a bubble level and went to town. I used a big breaker bar to loosen the drain and fill bolts, made it much easier.

    Thanks! One final question. Do you recall the amount of oil required? Do I need to buy 4 quarts or 5?

    Don't see it. I assume the drain plug is the one with the gasket.

    Third and fourth gen transaxles are different, bolt locations shifted? There's some pics here of 4th gen drain and fill bolt locations IIRC, maybe if you search. I think the volume is still a little under 4 quarts, and the bolt style and washers are the same as 3rd gen. And the drill is the same when refilling, just have it level, fill till it comes back out.

    And the bolts are "socket head cap screw", require a 10mm hex wrench style socket? You'd figure that out as soon as you have a look. I think yeah you should take the cover off, the drain fluid is liable to splash on or into it, make a mess.

    OTOH, if you don't remove the fill bolt first, you will manage to remove it later, because you will be MOTIVATED. :ROFLMAO:

    Maybe if he looks at the picture in this thread with his reading glasses he'll see it... It's in the picture to the left of the CV axle. Maybe he's never seen a half shaft before.

    This is my third gen kit. Do yourself a favour, get the torque value and use a torque wrench. I'm not sure about 4th Gen torque, third is 29 ft lb's, maybe the same? It's 10 mm hex socket recess on the bolt heads, if the same.

    Roughly 3' hose extension: leave it long and trim to suit. Big (resistance is futile) wrench for bolt removal makes life easy. :)
