Someone on Yahoo has posted they received a recall notice from their dealer. Below is the cut-and-paste: On 1/26/04 10:05 PM, stevewaters3 wrote: > Got a postcard from the local dealership stating that there is a > safety-related factory recall on the '04 Prius, and that the problem > needs to be corrected as soon as possible. Please, oh please. Haven't seen this mentioned on the 2004-Prius board. Do you have more details? Are all '04 Prius affected, or just certain VINs or packages Anyone else receive this? Peace
I called Toyota customer service at 800 331 4331 X33 and gave him my VIN number. My 2004 is not involved in the recall. The guy there told me that there is a recall for about 3500 Prius 2004 models due to some problem with one of the ECUs(electrical control units). He said that notification should have or will soon go out to the owners of the 3500 cars involved in the recall.
SSC 40A 2004 MODEL YEAR PRIUS HYBRID VEHICLE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT REPROGRAMMING SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN Dear Prius Customer: Thank you very much for your patronage of Toyota. We are dedicated to providing vehicles of outstanding quality and value. As part of our continuing efforts to provide superior customer satisfaction, Toyota is announcing a Special Service Campaign Program, which includes your Prius vehicle. What is the potential problem? On certain 2004 Model Year Toyota Prius vehicles, if the vehicle’s Hybrid Vehicle Electronic Control Unit detects a system fault, the master warning light and/or the hybrid system warning light may illuminate, depending upon the error identified. If this should occur, the vehicle will enter a “fail–safe†mode. Due to a programming error, if the vehicle is restarted in the “fail–safe†mode, a secondary condition may occur where the vehicle transmission may not operate smoothly. What is included in this Special Service Campaign? Before you are inconvenienced by this condition, Toyota would like to reprogram the HV ECU in your vehicle. Any Toyota dealer will conduct this service at NO COST to you. How do you take advantage of this Service Campaign? Please contact your authorized Toyota dealer to make an appointment to reprogram the HV ECU as soon as possible. The labor time necessary to reprogram the HV ECU is approximately one hour. However, depending upon the dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. The Toyota dealer will make every effort to assure your utmost convenience during this service. Please present this notice to the Toyota Dealer when you bring the vehicle in for your service appointment. If you no longer own the vehicle, please indicate so on the enclosed postage paid form, providing us with the name and address of the new owner. What if you have other questions? Please contact any Toyota dealer or call the Toyota Customer Assistance Center at 1–800–331–4331. We have sent this notice in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this condition may have caused you. Thank you for driving the Toyota Prius. Sincerely, TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC.
I called Toyota Customer Care (800) 331 4331 and verified that my 9090 is one affected by the service campaign..
Yep. I'm a recall owner as well. I took a clue from htmlspinnr. I purchased my Prius a week ago. After seeing this notice about the recall, I called Toyota customer service. My VIN is included in this "Service Campaign". No biggie. Should be just a short duration hassle at most. I still love this car!!!
I'm on the Recall Ship too! Just called Toyota Customer Care... my millennium silver package 9 is also part of the recall. The Rep was puzzled why I wasn't contacted yet, and I said I had no idea. She contacted my dealership (of my choice) via email and promised they would be in touch within 3 business days to set up an appt for the service. She didn't believe it was a very serious defect, but it was something that should be looked at right away... And if they can just fix the gas gauge while it's there  Last VIN digits -- 3213
Guys, Guys! What's with the 4-digit numbers? 3213? 7009? Last four of your VIN? Last five? Last six? What? Help me break the code!!! I'm driving an AM-7. Last digits are: 40010739. So that 10,739 or 0739? Or something else? Bob
That's the last 4. The range of involved numbers is relatively small. Everyone has 400XXXXX and it's preceeded by 20U or 22U something. We're just pointing out the number we have within the range so other's can see what numbers were actually affected.
Upcoming Service Has anyone had the Recall servicing performed yet? My Prius is scheduled to be serviced on Saturday and wonder if there is anything I need to look out for. Is the navigation system reset back to defaults? Anything else different afterwards?
Re: Upcoming Service If you scroll down the Main Forum page a bit you'll see this thread: http://www.priuschat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=499 with my experience. Here's what you might consider doing, find out if they've done the service for anyone else yet and, if not, whether they've updated the software yet. And, you'll see Rick's post that they didn't even have the necessary cable yet at his dealership. Other than that I've heard that the service can be done in as little as 45 minutes, though my experience was quite a bit longer. My NAV was reset to defaults, but several saved POIs were kept in the system. My mechanic apparently unhooked my 12V battery so my auto-window, reverse beep, radio presets, etc. had to be reset. My door lock selection (all doors unlock when one is unlocked) wasn't lost. If they don't unhook your 12V you should be fine, and I don't think it's supposed to be necessary in most cases. The paperwork says to expect the service to take 1.5 hours, don't schedule anything critical based on that time though.
Just got my recall work done - no discernable differences in the car (last five of the VIN is 0272). Settings were as I left them (radio presets, maintenance log, etc). Work done by Ron Goode Toyota of Alameda (CA) and it took them about an hour. The guy who drove my car out handed me the key and said 'man, this has got to be the coolest car ever!'
"Toyota is announcing a Special Service Campaign Program, which includes your Prius vehicle." Geez, talk about gift wrappng your trash! Sort of like at work when they say there is a "Resource Action, we are participating and you were selected". Kinda get your hopes up for something nifty with all the fancy weazel words. Why can't they just say RECALL?
Because it's not a recall. A special service campaign (or Technical Service Bulletin) pertains to minor issues, nuissances that only affect some cars (not all) and can be fixed under warranty if the owner so chooses. A recall affects ALL cars (or at least a specific VIN range), which, if not corrected, can produce serious problems and is required to be fixed (again, all under warranty).
Got the official letter in the mail today. Also included a postcard with a label. I wonder if they attach that to the ECU or to the car somewhere?
Fair question: Here's the deal on the label. The label is peeled off and placed on the completed paperwork which is then sent back to Toyota. Let us know if you learn more about the work done and the "desired outcome" of the software upgrade. I keep thinking there is more to this "service bulliten" than they are telling us. My Service Advisor was no help at all. Thanks.
Someone else set me straight on this too, so I looked it up and they were right. A RECALL specifically pertains to public safety issues, not less serious non-safetly issues.
ok, so i haven't heard a thing, but just got my car last sunday. can anyone tell if this vin is in the range? 20U6400400056 thanks. -r
