Drives me nuts I see a lot of prius c's with them but not on regular or V's.
Even some of those C's are fleet vehicles.

Ladies and gentlemen, I've driven cars with them and without them and it never made squat difference to me. Nor did I notice greatly when other vehicles had them or not. Could this just be craving for something else that we'd really like, or a verified safety issue? You decide and let me know please.

 

I particularly notice that they make the indicators on other cars going around roundabouts more visible.

All we need to do is educate people in how to actually get indicators to work, after all, it must be an effort to actually do so seeing so many people don't bother. It seems that some people see this feature as optional, despite it having been standard fitting on cars since prior to 1960.

Yep, never drove with them, but Dad's first car, an Austin A40 Devon had the illuminated ones - I think Austin referred to them as trafficators. They were pre-roundabouts, at least here, and with dull street lighting and headlights, I think they were better at night than daytime.

I did play with them a few times, cleaning contacts and lubricating the mechanism to get them working for him.

 

Way back when, we used to call the ones that popped out semaphores.

 

Here is an old Volkswagen one. I vaguely remember seeing then growing up in Canada.

From what I remember back then, there were very few motor vehicle on our roads and speeds were much lower than today's, so manoevering at junctions was a much more relaxed affair with ample time to see the little semaphores pop out of a car in front of you. That's if there was a car in front of you! More likely a bicycle or motorbike, even (horror of horrors) a pedestrian!

Edit: I forgot the horses and carts that still delivered bread, milk from a churn, coal, wet fish and groceries, not to mention the knife/scissor grinders and rag & bone men. All generated copious amounts of manure for the roses. My chore was to follow the carts with a small shovel and bucket waiting for nature to take it's inevitable course.

 

Anyone remember hand signals. Once in a long while I'll employ them, in particular to squeeze into another lane in a jam.

Yes, we invented them after the Battle of Agincourt. Wasn't there myself but understood it was too sure that our longbow men still had the first two fingers of their hand. See, it didn't always mean peace, or victory!

 

We have one around here that involves one finger.

Your on your test with a manual gearbox car on a busy street. The examiner wants you to turn left at the next junction and use appropriate hand signals. You frantically wind your window down leaving one hand on the wheel and stick your left arm out of the window. Braking gently, the revs drop off and the engine's about to stall. In your anxiety how do you can't decide whether to change gear taking both hands briefly of the wheel, or stop signalling briefly while urgently swapping hands on the wheel to execute a smooth (non-synchromesh) gear change only to rapidly reverse the procedure to get that hand signal going again and hope you get your arms crossed in the process.

You are thinking of the modern driver who signals halfway through the turn. They used to require that you use that dirty four letter word PLAN and signal your intent before the turn.
As you approach the turn, you stop signaling since driving the car is a higher priority at that time. You stop signaling when today's drivers start signaling.
