It has been about 3 weeks and we absolutely love our Prius Prime. About a week ago, we noted misalignment in the rear hatch (photos attached). So we took it back to the dealer here in Plano, TX, to see if they can do something about it. Luckily, there was a rep from Toyota and he measured/acknowledged there is an issue with the rear hatch or glass attachment. Am i the only one? I have not spotted any other Primes around here so can't compare!
Actually, we had someone here who had the same problem. Rain was getting into the back. I'll check the thread for you later. Got to go now.
Update: 7/19/2017 I have been calling and leaving messages with the service manager at Toyota of Plano where I purchased my Prime. They don't seem to bother calling me back with this manufacturig issue. Can anybody suggest what the next step can be? I called Toyota and talked to a gal and expained the rear hatch misaligment issue. I was shocked to hear her saying " so what do you want me to do?" I bought a Toyota for its build quality and reliability and now I am very much disappointed.
Why did the dealer not keep your car (and schedule work) as soon as the misalignment was confirmed by the Rep? Did they give you any reason for this delay? I hate to sound negative, but there does seem to be quite a few issues being reported about the new Prime. Many on this website. Very disappointing. Has the build quality of Toyota started to slip?
I am going to report this negligence to Toyota and other governing jurisdictions or parties. It is rediculous. We have owned Hondas and Prime is our first Toyota which replaced my Civic with +200k with no issue. I guess I should have kept my Civic.
In all honesty, the couple times I called Toyota Corporate in the past to report dissatisfaction with a dealer, they just told me that "dealers are an independent business" and Toyota has no control over them. But she was very polite when telling me that. Sorry to hear about your problem. Is there another dealer you can visit?
May I suggest taking this to another dealer, if that is an option in your area? Sometimes, a competing dealer would be interested in your satisfaction by being your hero to gain future business.
Update 08/02/2017 Field technicians from Toyota looked at the reported misalignment in the Prius Prime rear hatch/glass attachment. Although they admit there is uneven gap (left gap is twice as big as the right gap) they are saying the rear glass and hatch are within production standards and no repair/adjustment is needed at this time. Very disappointed in the quality of workmanship.
Just out of curiosity, is the back door on your car within the standard ranges (see below) from the Repair Manual (RM32D0U, available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com), in the section Vehicle Exterior: Door/Hatch: Back Door: Adjustment?
This is likely to keep the Toyota's production costs down for the carbon fiber hatch and curvy glass. It can also be to keep hatch production from slowing car production. That occurred early on.
What research did you do prior to purchase? Did you look at other Toyota vehicles in the same pricing category to establish a realistic expectation? Prime is a mainstream offering, not a Lexus. So, it won't be perfect. It will outclass some of the competition though. Check out what some of the other automakers deliver. You're in for a surprise. Getting a CFRP hatch with curved-glass is amazing for that price.
