After shopping around for a used car for a while, I'm thinking about buying a 2016 C one from Hertz rent2buy at 30k miles. I am going to pick up the car tomorrow morning for a three day test rental. I can then decide if I want to buy the car or not.

Even though the big rental companies probably take care of their fleet in terms of maintance and repairs, I am planning to take the car to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection to make sure there are no hidden issues.

Would it be best to go to a Toyota dealer or can I trust any reputable local mechanic to take a look? My concern would be that a hybrid is considerably more complex than a regular car and I don't even know if a regular auto shop would have the tools to run a proper diagnostic. On the other hand, it would be great to develop a relationship with a trusted mechanic nearby.

What can I expect to pay for the inspection and would a dealer charge more? Will the Toyota people lecture me about buying a former rental and not one of their own used cars?

I'm not only new to the Prius but also to car ownership, so this will be an adventure. I will keep this thread updated with my experience. Located in Queens, NY.

Don't expect a rental car to be well maintained unless there are formal maintenance records. Maintenance takes time and costs money. Rental car agencies only make money when the car is on the road. I wouldn't be surprised if a rental car never had the oil changed in its 30,000 mile life.

Rental cars may have been abused or in an accident. You won't find clues for auto body repair via CarFax or other similar databases since rental car repair shops don't report such repairs.

Keep in mind that these vehicles also may be models without typical accessories or features found on cars sold via the dealer system. Also, you should confirm with the state whether the same warranty for a dealer sourced car applies to a rental. The car may have been titled in a different state, without the hybrid drive coverage you expect (CARB).

Lots of pitfalls in rental cars. A better strategy might be a lease return.

I worked for a major rental company for several years........and your wild speculations are NOT based on any real world facts.

I do agree, however, that a retired rental might not be the best idea for a brand new car buyer.
Also I think that a hybrid might not be a good choice either, regardless of where it comes from.

This was pretty much the answer I anticipated, but not the one I was asking for.

I am aware of the risks of buying a retired rental -- which is I want it checked out by a mechanic before making a decision. The question is: Worth going to a Toyota dealer for a check up or can I use someone nearby?

It makes sense that rental companies would want to keep their cars in circulation as much as possible. But isn't a broken-down car and an unhappy customer who needs a replacement more expensive than doing regular oil changes / tire rotations / software updates? Because I do not own a car I use rentals a lot and never had any issues more serious than a dirty floor mat.

The car was first titled in CA and I'm in another CARB state (NY). It's under the 10 yr / 150k miles battery warranty and the manufacturer warranties are all transferable.

Can you elaborate on that last point? I'm by no means an unexperienced driver. Living in the city, I just never owned a car myself.

Sorry. Yes you should take it to a Toyota dealer OR an independent shop that has extensive experience with hybrids AND has good ratings on any local "online feedback" sites you can find.

Typically a hybrid sells for a premium over the price of a similar gas only model ........but with the price of gas down, that extra initial investment may NEVER be recovered.

Then there are additional maintenance considerations with the dual systems and all.

Owning a car is somewhat different than just driving one.
I think you should master the basics first, no matter what the subject is, before you take on a more complicated route.

Update: I decided to buy the car!

We went to a shop that works with a lot of hybrids and focuses on Toyotas. The mechanic gave the car a clean bill of health and said it was in excellent condition. The only issue is that the tires are almost due for replacement, but it looks like I can get Hertz to take care of that for free.

I then test-drove the car for two days (mostly city driving on Saturday and an 80 mile trip Sunday).

    Here's what convinced me:
    - Excellent in the city where 80+% of my driving will be! I guess that's what the C is built for, after all. I love how quiet the car is, even when the ICE is running. Despite what I read in some reviews, I also really like how the car handles. Visibility is good too.
    - The seats are great with plenty of lumbar support.
    - The geek in me likes the tech and observing what the dual system does. I assume that will get old eventually :)
    - FE, obviously.

My wife and I were concerned about space, initially, but we did a Costco haul and transported some other stuff without even having to take down the back seat. The other concern was that it does feel very sluggish on the highway, especially going uphill, but the car did technically keep up with traffic. I never felt unsafe, and for the occasional road-trip that's good enough.

    Good choice.

    We love ours.

I hope you realize that the MPG figures that the onboard computer comes up with are a little.......optimistic. ;)

Yeah, they thoughtfully(?) gave me the car with an almost empty tank. I filled it up when the fuel light came on and will see how many actual miles I can go on that. Will take me a while to use up a tank of gas though :)

You might want to check the engine air filter, and the cabin air filter. Congrats on getting a Prius c, enjoy the driving.

I've never been in a situation where the Prius C didn't have enough power - but sometimes you have to push that pedal all the way down. The "Eco Score" display with it's little graph of throttle position is misleading - the top end of that graph is nowhere near the limit of actual throttle pedal travel - in fact it's only about halfway. If you push the pedal down the rest of the way the CVT will rev that little engine way up and you'll get substantially more power out of it. The sound won't be pleasant, but it'll get you going.

Wait.... what? Is it the orange gas pump icon? Does it light up as a test when you first start the car? Please see my thread: Does the C-two have a low fuel light? | PriusChat

Yes, that's the one. I'll check if it lights up when you first start the car. Once the gas pump icon came on I put in 8.11 gallons.

I think the surprise is that you have an orange gas icon. Can you take a picture of that please? You should be able to start the car and the light will come on.

Sorry for the delay. I got Hertz to throw in a set of new tires, which took a few days for whatever reason. I'm still really happy with the car.

Turns out the orange fuel light is on the display on the right, but it does not come on when I turn on the car like the other indicator lights.

Tires have to be low rolling resistance. Make sure of that.

They gave me General Altimax RT43s. These are not LRR. I didn't drive with either set of tires long enough to really compare mpg. Some other people reviewed the RT43 here and mostly liked them:

So far, they feel like new tires, but otherwise okay. They held up well in a rain storm last weekend. Tire pressure was a little low when I got them. I now use 40 front, 36 rear.

Either way, I won't complain about a free new set of tires.

I think of previous rental cars like homes next to electricity towers. I see owners beat on their cars and I see people drive gently in their rentals. My BIL didn't even know what changing the oil meant. He just took it to the mechanic when it rode rough and they fixed it. If they couldn't, he bought a new one. Ditto with fear of EM radiation causing cancer to owners of homes next to electricity towers. Not all rentals are bad and not all lease returns are good. The only thing to note is that people have a fear of rental cars and that means it needs to be reflected in the price I pay. I'm 8 months into my used previous rental car. Let's see if the above will be my famous last words. I didn't choose to buy a rental, it just happened to be a good deal.

I got non LRR tires on my Prius. My butt tells me they handle better than the EP20 LRR that came stock on the car. Better in terms of improved stability in wet and dry conditions and better comfort in lower NVH. However, fuel economy dropped about 10%. I'm planning to go with EP422+ when the current wears out
